nameless 10min drabbles

Did the 10min drabble challenge together with damagea and elindar and it was super fun! \o/ My drabbles unexpectedly turned out to be about Juri. For the last two drabbles imagine a picture of the village where Satsuki and Mei moved to in My Neighbor Totoro. :'D

The clatter of the train sounded almost like a lullaby in Juri’s ears when he leaned his head back against the window of the train. It was ridiculously late and the day had been long but he didn’t want to sleep yet or he wouldn’t be getting any sleep at home anymore.

A soft touch of hair brushed across his cheek when Shintaro’s head fell against Juri’s shoulder. Juri glanced around to make sure no-one was watching and secretly reached his hand to take Shintaro’s. The boy didn’t flinch or wake up but he tightened his fingers around Juri’s just a bit.

Juri smiled softly and only let the hand go right before their stop.

The lady behind the counter smiled knowingly when Juri rushed into the small post office.

“Anything new today?” Juri asked, gasping for breath, having run through the whole village after he had seen the old trustworthy post car driving past his home.

“What a coincidence,” she said and soft understanding flashed in her eyes when she handed Juri the envelope she had just picked from the box the post car had left for her to sort into people's post lockers.

“She must really like you,” she said and nodded towards the letter, “there aren’t many people nowadays who actually take the time to write every week so faithfully!”

“I guess so,” Juri answered just to be polite even though the letter felt like burning in his hands.

He only opened the envelope when he got back home. The smell of the usual yellowish paper and the familiar crooked handwriting were precious to him. In fact there was only one thing Juri loved more: the one who had sent the letter.

“I’ve got some awesome news,” Yasui had written in the beginning instead of any of the usual greetings and Juri’s breath got caught again when he saw the next line.

“I’ll be coming back for summer holiday.”

The past month had been long. The last week of the month had been even longer, and the current day had been the longest of all. Hokuto and Jesse had teased Juri about it; they had told him he was a ridiculous fool in love and warned him of becoming like one those air-headed heroes of the cartoons they sometimes saw in the movie theater of the nearby town.

“Don’t care,” Shintaro had said when he had sat next to Juri for a while before returning to do the chores his mother had sent him to do. Juri had simply shaken his head with a light laughter. His friends were right; he was ridiculous. And he was in love.

The sun was already setting and its last warm rays lingering on Juri’s back when he heard the whistle of the oncoming train and saw the first fluffy clouds of steam on the sky.

He had waited for hours but it didn’t matter anymore. There was nothing in the world that could compare with what he felt when the train finally stopped and Yasui stumbled out of the train with his huge suitcases and Juri saw a delighted smile spreading on the older boy’s face when their eyes met.
