So I STILL have to do a wrap up... i know. im sorry. maybe tonight. Since getting home it's been sleep, more sleep and then a night at the car show and bar.

On the list of things to do still are a few remixes and collaborations. This weekend is prolly the earliest I'll be able to get started.

Time, why do you evade me so completely?

I've got quite a ( Read more... )

I was looking at the new line last year during the refresh and didn't care for it. The Glossy screen sucks for low lighting conditions and any light source glares off the screen which makes on stage work difficult. I tested it and it completely blinds you and makes the screen unviewable.

The prior generation also has 2 firewire ports while the new generation only has one(and an 800 port at that) which means external soundcards that support Firewire 400 can't be used with the new gen MBPs without an adaptor. The only real advantage is the extra Hard Disk space and the processor specs are the same.

End Result: I would go for the prior generation MBP for a few bucks less which nabs you a lot more in the long run.

I'll echo this as well - I'd suggest looking at the apple refurbs - they come with a new warranty and are completely rebuilt - anything "used" or showing any wear/tear is replaced - you'd never know the difference and they're tested more thoroughly than a new machine even.

Check the apple store for the link - they start at $1350 with the matte screen/2.4ghz core2duo.

can i get anything faster than the 2.4ghz though? Id like to get to at least the 2.6 or 2.8....

sure - comes down to what a small increase in speed is worth to ya :)

15.4" MBP Non-Glossy
2.4 - 1350
2.5 - 1499
2.6 - 1799

Those are the only speeds those were manufactured in - the new ones are glossy - and also available in refurb - albeit more $$. The current generation quietly received a speed bump last month so you may see prices drop a little more in the coming weeks.

well that's kind of tough until the distros start to get the disc. I think in a few days you'll see it stateside and available online. Most of the distros are saying the 20th is when they'll have the disc.

Crunch Pod always has a fantastic price, but it will be there on the 30th: http://www.crunchpod-distro.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_24_193&products_id=524

You can get it from the label through discogs: http://www.discogs.com/sell/item/10500384?ev=bp_det

Darla will have it: http://www.darla.com/comingSoon/

The consensus on the 3dpro listserv is that the new line of mac pro is not worth the money. Then again, this mostly concerns openGL 3d apps, and Apple has definitely moved away from catering to that market ( ... )
