That summer job sounds like such a terrific and memorable experience, and I'm glad you're still enjoying outdoor excursions when you can. :)

I have similar memories about being a camp counselor. There is nothing quite like sleeping in a place where you can hear nature rustling around you.

"nostril-achingly dry" is such a perfect piece of description. Colorado is still like that for me and I've been here nearly a year.

And you came from Cali, right? So that isn't even a hugely humid starting point. I love Colorado, but my skin hates it. I feel like I would have the leathery equivalent of a permanent deep water tan within a year if I ever moved there.

I think you are right. People do have a connection to the outdoors. In fact the act of looking at pleasant scenery and just being outside is proven to lower BP and lessen depression.

I've yet to be to the Grand Canyon. I did spend a month in the deserts of Cali and Nevada. Calico hills and the Rainbow Mountains of the canyon range there were beautiful, but I sorely missed my trees.

I agree completely! And feel that this connection is missing for many modern humans and it is a terrible and tragic loss. The earth is our mother and the sky our father and we are living in the place between....Hiking and camping are such a good way to connect back to place. And create body memories, reptilian brain memories. Smells, feels, sounds.

I loved this entry. You always have something to impart that is worth taking the time to glean. I would love to read more about this lighthouse keeper's cottage and your time there.
