So here is what I put in the chili I'm trying to make. I sort of loosely followed a recipe because I didn't have all the ingredients

Sounds pretty good to me! You could add a little spoonful of cocoa or some good chocolate if you have some! If it's runny, tomato paste will help too. Otherwise looks tasty!

It was a little watery so I put a small can of tomato paste in it. I'm curious what the chocolate is for! I added some sugar (just a little), but I find it hard to imagine how just adding a teensy dash of something makes much of a difference.

I thought it was tasty, but David said it was bland. I guess I'll add more chili powder next time! We've got a few days worth of leftovers. :D

Nooo, not bland. I just said I prefer it hotter. It was perfectly tasty.

Chocolate gives it this kind of ... intriguing depth? It's a pretty common spice in Mexico.
