I'm scheduled to have surgery on friday to correct a deviated septum.  The procedure's called a septoplasty and it involves them sticking knives up my nose while I'm asleep.

I had no idea i had a deviated suptum until recently but it does explain why i don't breath through my nose all that well.  I only found out when i went to get a hearing test ( Read more... )

Whoa. Good luck w. that, man.

I've known people who treat normal cold-related congestion with warm saline irrigation. There's a thing called a, "Neti Pot" ("Netty Pot"? "Netty's girl"?) that is a little ceramic teapot-looking thing that has a nostril-sized spout on it. You lay your head sideways and do that circular-breathing-with-warm-saline-water exercise.

The whole thing's no bueno, if u ask me. I can't even WATCH someone do that Neti bidness. Speaking of circular breathing, you can champion nasal irrigation as a path to trippy didg' skills, br'ah. Shaka.

Seriously, though - hope the procedure goes well.

my aunt swears by the nasal irrigation thing. she uses a solution of water, salt, and a bit of baking soda. she mixes it all up in one of those little olive oil bottles with the metal spout, as it is the perfect size. i really want to start doing it, but its unpleasantness equals continual procrastination.

good luck with the surgery!

You know minty eye wash is the only true path to health.
Hey maybe your deviated septum is the source of all your non-existent hearing problems.
hehehehehehe.....

Amanda Watson tried to teach me how to do it once, but I sucked at it. I think Justin was able to do it though.

i'm getting to be a pro. i can now do it without using my mouth so that i blast it into one nostril and it shoots out the other one. very satisfying.
it does weird stuff to my ears though; i think cause some water gets in the eustascion (sp?) tubes and makes wet pressure-change sensations go on like you've been swimming.

it makes sense that justin can do it. who's amanda watson?

Dude! You must have known Amanda! She and Mark Loeser were together (or "lovers" as Justin would insist on calling couples back then and probably still does). She was with Justin for a while too, but it was when they lived in Victoria. I know you know her. She's a lovely and very intense woman. And nostrilly talented.

I am so excited that you can get it in one nostril and out the other! I still want to learn so bad. I got a serger today! (In totally unrelated news). Also, I miss you. Please come down for a weekend. Thx, Erin

right, amanda. i'm pretty sure i've met her and i've definitely heard alot about her over the years. re. "lovers"; that is a very justin thing to say. i swear, that boy has possession of a very powerful and persuausive language. i can't even separate my own from terms that i've adopted from his over the years and it's always amazing to meet new people who have recently met him and started adopting words like "harsh", "intense", "beautiful" and "so wonderful!" (without any irony). i remember when emily came to visit vancouver; we were in a shop in chinatown and saw this fucked up sad looking piggy bank and she exclaimed "oh! that's really upsetting" with laughther and a mixture of mock sadness and aesthetic delight. it was incredible, it was as if justin had just materialized in the room for a moment.

will do. i can't wait to hear stories from you and honestly, just to see you again! it's been so long!

sorry i've been incommunicado since you've been back. i've been sick for a week now which is a pretty shitty lead-up to surgery. nevertheless, i'll be healed soon enough and then we can start drinking in the sun.
