what's your favorite christmas music? i'm thinking classy, not silly. i think for me, the ultimate song would have to be "Silver Bells," sung by (i think) Bing Crosby

if you're thinking of the one on the old record that Granddad had, it wasn't Bing Crosby i don't think.. i remember the record sleeve showing a man and woman in cowboy hats. but that song's always been a favorite of mine as well. especially the bass/baritone part that underscores the chorus.
I think we are currently in possession of that record, at the house... a google search reveals that it seems to be out of print, so no luck getting a track listing. call Mom, though.
can't remember a lot of the record, but i think it had White Christmas (Nat King Cole?) Chestnuts Roasting -- not sure who Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives Rudolph - Gene Autry Silver Bells - those two in cowboy hats Little Drummer Boy - some choir or other Do You Hear what I Hear - Perry Como? Bing Crosby?
i think there were a couple more, but damnifiknow what they are. like i said, call Mom. tell her it's the christmas record with pictures of the singers on the back, and i think a great big ol' santa claus on the front, but don't quote me on that latter bit.
if that record really is discontinued, we're going to have to find a way of recording it off of the vinyl, because it really isn't christmas without it, and once the record player finally dies i will be very sad.
We always listened to Andy Williams Christmas albums while tree-decorating when I was growing up. Even though they're the hokey-esque renditions, they're so comforting and homey. Recent years have brought any/all Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which kicks ass. I always liked the Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Suite, cos I danced to it for years.
Jars of Clay has the best cover of Little Drummer Boy ever, too.
oh yes, that's such a good cover! i love it! whenever i go home for christmas, my mom always insists on watching the andy williams christmas special, so he's a big part of our holiday, too.
aprotim and i have lately been in love with "o holy night". such a beautiful song.
i've always been a sucker for "the Carol of the Bells" just because the vocal harmony is so amazing... but it is kind of simultaneously melodramatic and ridiculous.
otherwise, i'll i've got for you is "Christams Sucks" by Tom Waits and Peter Murphey, which isn't annoying and cheesy like the grandma-reindeer song, but not exactly the sort of thing you put on to feel the warm glow of the season, since it's basically Tom Waits and Peter Murphey being creepy and morbid.
it's my favorite christmas song, but i don't really do holidays ;)
"Boar's Head Carol" is actually a pretty cool little song, and I recommend it! THE DOWNSIDE: the only recording of it that I know and can guarantee is amazing is "Olde English Christmas" which you may not uh have to hand.

On a more serious note, "Light One Candle" by Peter, Paul, and Mary is an awesome Channukah song.

Now you can't hardly walk around the North Pole without stepping in reindeer guts.
