Master List: Day of Who

Apr 02, 2009 01:55

And... we're back! Hope you enjoyed our little joke. :-D

prank layout beautifully made for us by scholarslayouts

Some of you may have noticed a little change around here yesterday. Lots of Doctor Who fic! A distinct lack of Jack & co. Life beyond the Hub!!! Us rec'ing DW fic like we've been a Doctor Who community all along!

Don't worry; you weren't retconned. (Not much, anyway, and it should be wearing off by now. They just don't make retcon like they used to.)

As we all know, without Doctor Who, there is no Torchwood. We'd been planning a day to celebrate Who fanworks for quite some time, and then it occurred to us...what better day to celebrate our brilliant, quirky, ridiculous, fantastic, cracktastic progenitor than April Fool's?

Hence: Torchwood House: The Doctor Files.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming -- Jack and his merry band of miscreants, the pterodactyl, Cardiff etc., but first: a word from our sponsors a treasure-house of fanwork from our parent-show...

Below the cut, you'll find rec'd a sampling of Whovian fic (and a few vids!) of all genres and persuasions [gen, (fem)slash, het, poly], hailing from time periods classic to new, arranged in alphabetic order by title.

If you like the Doctor (or if you'd like to be introduced -- he's quite awesome, really), we hope you'll find something to suit your taste here, whatever that may be.

FIC
(Alias) Smith and Jones by doyle-sb4. [Mickey/Martha; sex: het; rating: open; spoilers: DW 4x13; 1500 words, oneshot; category/genre: romance]
Summary: Somewhere in the back of his mind, he thought he’d always been waiting for the perfect moment to kiss her - the big film moment, all glamour and violin music and bright and romantic. Not an empty plaza in Cardiff with rain starting to drizzle down and a pterodactyl watching them with interest from the top of the fountain.
Why you should read it: Because Martha + Mickey is (un?)expectedly awesome.

And Now, After All The Stars by such_heights. [Rose & Will; sex: gen; rating: standard; spoilers: DW S2 & all of His Dark Materials; oneshot; category/genre: relationship, drama, adventure]
Summary: After the end, Will Parry finds Rose Tyler, and discovers he is not as alone as he'd feared.
Why you should read it: Many worlds, and abandoned lovers -- having these two find each other is extremely satisfying.

Belle de Jour by chase820. [Ten/Rose; sex: het; rating: explicit; 10,551 words, oneshot; spoilers: DW 2.Girl in the Fireplace; category/genre: romance, angst, dark]
Summary:: After the Madame de Pompadour interlude, Rose realizes that loving the Doctor is a far trickier affair than she thought. What kind of girl must she be, to accept the man he is now? Answering that question will stretch her loyalty--and her sanity--to the breaking point.
Why you should read it: This is not your average, every day Ten/Rose. Fucked up, twisted and unxpected - still lovely though.

The Boy Who Killed Time (The Last Love Song Remix) by rosa-acicularis. [Ten, Martha + others; sex: gen; rating: open, 9000 words, oneshot; spoilers: DW 3.The Lazarus Experiment; category/genre: drama, erudite, time travel]
Summary: There are ghosts in the TARDIS, and music in the corridors.
Why you should read it: The Doctor and Martha find the past becoming the present, and the outside universe gradually sinking away. With a wonderfully realised cast of both classic and new characters, this is a brilliant piece of work, with all the grandeur and the tragedy that lie at the heart of Doctor Who. This is a story that will stay with you long after you've read the closing lines.

Brilliant By Degrees by wendymyr. [Ten, Martha, Jack, Donna; sex: gen; rating: open; spoilers: DW 4x13; oneshot; category/genre: relationship, feelgood]
Summary:: That’s what the text message said. Come. VERY IMPORTANT. (Jack says he’ll come after you if you don’t).
Why you should read it: A Donna fix-it in which we discover that there's more than one way to be brilliant. Heartwarming and delightful.

Chaos Theory in Vortex Orbits in Relative Dimensions in Time and Space by earlgreytea68. [Ten/Rose + OCs; sex: het; rating: explicit; spoilers: DW S2; long series (27 parts); category/genre: romance, adventure, au, kidfic, drama]
Summary: And then there came a day when Rose said she was having a baby. Hijinks ensue from there.
Why you should read it: Kidfic is not everyone's cup of tea, but this story is compulsively readable and addictive. The kids are real characters, not cardboard placeholders, so much so that (if you get sucked in) you will find yourself happily following the oldest to college, in 26 part series: Chaos Theory on Dimensionally Stable Objects on Earth College Campuses. And reading all the extras here!

Children of Time by shadowfiction. [River/Ten, Jack; sex: gen; rating: open; 1523 words, oneshot; spoilers: through DW 4.Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead & TW: 2x05: Adam; category/genre: time travel, drama, relationship]

The Comedie of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by reina_isabella. [Ten; sex: gen; rating: standard; spoilers: Hamlet (Act I)?; oneshot; category/genre: defies categorization]
Summary: Act 1 of Hamlet. No, really..

Summary: It’s not the life they expected to have, but it’s enough.
Why you should read it: Beautifully written; thoughtful, evocative conceit of grammatical organization as Rose and Ten.2 learn their own new language.

Den of Thieves by livii. [Seven/Ace/Mel; sex: het; rating: standard; spoilers: general; 897 words, oneshot; category/genre: erudite, time travel, relationship]
Summary: "You've gone for ages, you've already gone, you're still here, just arrived, haven't even met you yet. It all depends on who you are and how you look at it. Strange business, time."
Why you should read it: They're all caught in a tangled web of time; harsh, brittle, and shiny. It hurts, but good. Check out all of livii's fic here; she writes every character, practically, from Classic to New; Torchwood to SJA. All of them delightful.

Song: Michael Kamen
Summary: *points to title*
Why you should watch it: Funny, sweet and charming. Beautifully edited character study of quirky, quirky Ten.

Oh What a World by such_heights
Song: "Oh What A World" by Rufus Wainright
Summary: The Doctor's life is mostly bittersweet to tragic by its very nature, granted. But the past couple of episodes especially, I can't quite help the growing refrain - cheer up, emo Time Lord. It's not all bad.
Why you should watch it: This vid is pretty delightful in every respect: beautiful editing, great song choice, and basically just totally lovable. Spoilers through the Next Doctor.

Skullcrusher Mountain by blinkidybah
Song: "Skullcrusher Mountain" by Jonathan Coulter
Summary: Doctor/Master
Why you should watch it: Song choice really makes this vid; the lyrics are perfectly perfect! And this pair: they are and have always been SO slashy.

What About Everything by calapine.
Song: "What About Everything" by Carbon Leaf
Summary: A tribute to Doctor Who 1963 - 2007.
Why you should watch it: It's difficult to believe this song wasn't written for this show, the lyric (and tonal quality!) match up is so perfect, after listening they become almost inseperable. It's a gorgeous tribute to Doctor Who.
