Strange days we live in...

I saw something weird in the sky tonight. Me and CJ were out at Wheelock Park smoking a bowl (we were not very high, trust me) and we were star gazing. We had begun to talk about how we would like to see a UFO so we could make the judgment for ourselves, and oddly enough only a few moments later right next to CJ's head in the sky a very bright ( Read more... )

Lots of things can cause bright flashes, perhaps some grouping space debris that was close to eachother fell through the atmosphere and combusted, or perhaps a distant star exploded.

Coulda been the ISS taking a picture of you from space too.

That night the moon was near regulus, so there may have been some odd diffraction events as well.

I would never rule out extraterrestrials though!

Really I'm thinking that space debris is probably the most likely thing it could have been, but from now on I will be watching the skies a lot more closely!

I will rule out the moon diffracting in strange ways because it was a bright white flash (like an LED) and the moon usually refracts in it's normal yellowish hue.

Could have been a distant star exploding, but would that account for the other two flashes? They appeared in a triangle one at a time.

I felt pretty sure about what it likely could have been, but I wanted to let your imagination run a bit. I'm too am hoping for psychic aliens someday.

Space debris was the closest answer, but it isn't really debris - there are over 13 thousand satellites in orbit. Many of these are in "near earth" orbit, meaning they are actually quite close to the atmosphere. Google Earth will show where they are for you based on a government run databse of their locations. If you are interested in seeing the field of satellites, go download google earth software then surf to

So chances are it was a government psychic satellite that was in range. Remember to bring your tinfoil hat next time, or if you liked it, your tinfoil parabolic receiver.
