What the fuck is a meme?

Jun 24, 2003 11:19

I am still learning these things, and I tried out the "What Does Your Live Journal Name Mean?" meme, and when I typed in "totalvirility" as one word, it told me I was a sporting great, that I was dull, and that my favorite color was black, all 3 patently false. Typing it in as two words gave me a slightly more accurate reading of myself, that was ( Read more... )

fierce, I totally agree with your assessment of astrology, the only thing thats ever weirded me out is apparently my birthday is THE DAY for one to born who has an instinctual understanding of language and its intracacies; and I like language a lot & am obsessed with accurate self expression -- which I think is hugely elusive and mostly shruged off in favor of aphromisms and cheap, shallow adjectives, so...yeah, bullshit, I know, but you wanna go to VMAs, which is like so totally worse than fucking JEanne Dixon

I hate my outfit today

my friend bonie is having abday party on a roof with champ and cake if you wanna come, bucko

I would go to the VMAs if somebody offered it to me, but I would get really high first. Then, you would be really stoned at the VMAs, and wouldn't that be a trip?

No, Id shoot a rapper or VJ

The only way Id go to the VMAs was if I were (like for real) suicidal. Then I round run onstage when somebody especially awful was performing and fucking blow my brains out

Then you'd be like that news anchor-lady that they based the movie "Network" off of. Chris Kundel, or something.

I can't believe you would only go to the VMAs out of suicidal feelings. I mean, it's not like you'd be chained to your seat with razor wire, and a man training a gun on your head the entire time. For Christ's sake, you could see if it was fun, and then leave if it wasn't. That's the wonderful thing about free will.

dude, astrology works. it just does. i am not saying there is necessarily some metaphysical shit going on, it is possible that people are overexposed to horoscopes from birth and psychosomatize their characteristics, but i bet you i could guess a statistically significant number of people's signs. sure, you can say it's coincidence, but unless you are in Rosencrantz & Gildenstern are dead, or at my house last Tuesday night, probably not.
and what was that about the tarot deck mr. "read my tarot"?
you, for example, are a total aquarius. so was nate. except you are like the Light Aquarius and he's like the Dark Aquarius. jeremy, matt s. and chuck are all Geminis. you don't see any similarities in their personalities? (obviously manifested in different ways).
call me!

Tarot's fun. So's astrology, I suppose. No, they don't work.
I see some basic personality traits shared by Chuck and Jeremy (not Matt S), ones which are also, for that matter, shared by Nate and I- see what I'm getting at?

The similarities I have to Nate are also the similarities I have to Jeremy, and the similarities I have to Chuck- namely, the propensity towards playful, yet disengaged analysis of self, events and art. You can say Nate and I go about it in an Aquarian way while Jeremy and Chuck go about it in a Geminical way, but you'd be making something up. And Skippy was just a twichy freak who wore kilts and had naked freak-outs and stole computers and TVs, and I don't think the "Gemini" played into it.
But then, like I said, I'm an aquarius. I suppose we all feel this way.

dude, benjamin had some neat things to say in "on astrology" about astrology and mimesis that you should read.
my point was that even though you do share all these similarities with the people i listed, i could guess who was an Aqua and who was a Gem. It's an entirely different affect.

and btw, the verb is "affected" NOT "effected"

i can't believe you have time to double-post astrology-trashing posts but you can't call your best friend!

I'm not sure who this is, but I don't think 'narcissism' is the word you were looking for.

'cynicism', yes. 'narcissism', certainly debatable, but absolutely not demonstrated by this particular post.
