CHOICE FOUR

Apr 07, 2016 10:04

The man nods his approval , and you feel strangely pleased that you’ve made a decision he agrees with. Not that you need anyone’s approval to feel good about your choices, but it is always nice when someone else gives your self-esteem a boost, isn’t it? He offers a gloved hand to you, and you take it, allowing him to hoist you into the boat which, upon second look, is a bit more stable than it seemed at first.

Once you are safely within the confines of the boat, it begins to glide across the lake on its own accord. You mouth drops open in wonder once again. You’ve run into magic anyway!

You lean over to look at the water and notice shadows swimming underneath the boat. When you look up at the man you notice he too is watching them with hawk eyes.

“Are they dangerous?”

He looks over at you for a brief moment before returning his gaze to the shadows below.

“You could say that,” he replies, and that’s the end of that conversation.

You’re not sure why he is so hesitant to explain why the lake is off limits, but maybe it is just too gruesome to even think about. You still really want to know though, and you hum discontentedly under your breath at the lack of information. You don’t need a full blown tutorial on the dangers on the lake. Just a quick peek at the psd will do. You can extrapolate from there; you’re quick and clever like that.

After a long period of silence, you notice that you seem to have made very little progress across the lake. You seem to be perpetually stuck in the middle.

“Does this lake even have another side?”

You aren’t really expecting an answer from dirty, dark, and silent, and you are surprised when he chuckles.

“Seems that way, doesn’t it? Tricks your mind, this lake does. You’re lucky you didn’t drop a toe into the water. Then you never would have gotten out.”

You shiver at his tone and from the steadily cooling air. The lake doesn’t look nearly as crystalline now and the sun isn’t shining any longer.

“Will we reach the shore soon?”

You’re suddenly very eager to have your feet on solid earth. The sooner you can leap off this boat and back onto a dirt path the better.

Your boat captain has gone silent again, leaning against his oar and looking pensive as he watches the ever darkening water.

He stare at him, hoping for an answer but not expecting one. You’re glad you perfected your staring contest skills with your graphics program a long time ago because staring is the only reason you see it.

The boat captain’s eye begin to glow. It’s soft a first, almost as though it’s just another trick your eyes are playing on you, but then the brightness increases.

Panic flutters in your stomach and closes up your throat. You fairly certain nothing good is going to come from this, and once again you’re faced with a choice.

The water is still an option. You’re not the strongest swimmer, but you think you could make it to shore on your own even through the dark water. [JUMP LINK: DIVE INTO THE WATER, QUICK!]
But the captain’s warning is still ringing in your mind, and the water is still very sinister looking especially now that the swimming shadows have merged with the darkness of night. Besides the shore wasn’t even visible when you last looked over your shoulder to find it. How are you supposed to find it in the dark without the help of a boat? Glowing eyes seem almost friendly in the face of that. [JUMP LINK: STAY ON THE BOAT!]
