I joined the fandom a year ago after watching Buffy for the first time, and I admit I don't like the comics - I've defaulted to thinking of them as "authorized fanfiction" (or crackfic) but you really are spot-on with your analysis of how they handled (or rather, didn't handle) the reunion of Buffy and Spike. Of course I went from watching Chosen to seeing the comics (and being rather shocked by them) in a matter of weeks, not years as with other fans, but I really was astonished at how they dropped that ball, and you've summed it up admirably.

I also admit to liking the S9 a little bit more (despite some wonky issues with bodily violations, etc - I don't buy them but I glance at them or read stormwreath's reviews - but once again you're spot-on with your comments about how opaque Buffy is being, and again it smacks of convenience, aka they wanted Spike to have his own title, therefore if Buffy wanted him around that would have been impossible. Of course, the lack of Sarah and James really affects the comics; the shades of nuance and emotion ( ... )
