Detention Not What It Used to Be

MR and AR, seventh and eighth grade siblings who got a detention in English, came to me to serve them as I am the overflow person this week. The starting bell rang.
"Do you both have something to do? This study hall is a quiet study hall, with time served only counting while you are working on something or reading."
I teach them both reading.
They took out free reading books. He looked at her, and asked, "What are you reading?"
She began a rather long-winded rendition of the plot and characters so far.
"Did you already forget what I said when the bell rang?"
"Oh," he said, looking eagerly at his book. She did the same.
Both served the rest of their detentions reading books, quietly. They are probably the ONLY two junior high reading students I have who would have cheerfully done so.
The bell rang. I was telling the janitress about my stepfather's surgery.
They BOTH kept reading.
"Hey, you two, the bell rang."
They do NOT immediately look up.
"BELL!"
"Usually, the teacher says, 'You may go,'" AR supplies.
I look at them, both with books still open. "I did. You didn't."
They get ready to leave, but don't.
"What did you get your detention for?" I asked MR.
"Reading in class."
We all share a laugh.
"If she really wanted to torture you, she'd have said, 'Make them both do SCHOOL WORK, not READ.'" We all share another laugh.
Before they left, AR had to share how she got hers, too.
Shades of Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit, "But, whatever you do, PLEASE DON'T THROW ME IN THAT THERE BRIAR PATCH!"
May all my duty this week be so light.
The janitoress was waiting to turn on the vacuum.
When they left, she came over and prayed with me for my stepfather, who might still be in surgery. I haven't heard yet.
