maybe significant isn't the correct word. but i like how he actually sounds like a 17 year old fuck up who just got kicked out of school in the 40's or whenever the fuck it was written. holden caulfield is a believable character with believable problems. i like the description of his fight with that asshole near the beginning, the one where holden - clearly the smarter of the two, the one who actually does the compositions and gets no credit for them - is held down powerless, forced to submit. i like how his sister covers for him when he smokes a cigarette inside. i like how she was packed and ready to leave with him as soon as he told her he was running away. then, just as in real life, they don't ever get away, and we really don't know if his problems are ever resolved, if he goes on to make anything of his talents that his teachers never see because he never makes the effort to show them. why? because the only ones who ever reach him, those who are supposed to keep him from falling off the side of the cliff, turn out to be
( ... )
i enjoy when he talks about his suave roommate getting all the ladies, though in reality he's just a disgusting asshole with a bad razor covered in filth and grime. i remember that well. i also remember that this book makes weirdos become murderers. murder my scrot, hagan.
