If there are eight people but only five months in which there are birthdays, does that mean that only five out of the eight must sign up to provide birthday cakes?

With this few people, it would make more sense to celebrate each person's birthday on his/her birthday, rather than have a monthly birthday celebration.

Well, that might work if there wasn't significant overlap in birthdays. There are two on June 15, two in September and three in December (two of them on consecutive days). There are only 5 months with birthdays in them.

Also, the current system reduces the number of birthday parties I have to suffer through by almost 50%. :-)
