We grew a herb and tomato garden this year. Not only has it paid for itself a billion times, but it is wonderful to have fresh herbs at your disposal.

No, although Thai basil does have a purplish cast and flowers, the dark purple kind is a variety of Genoa (standard Italian). Thai basil's got smallish, flat leaves, and has a somewhat anise smell/taste on top of the basil smell/taste. We got ours at the State Farmer's Market, and I imagine more and more of the local farmer's markets that sell herbs early in the year will have Thai basil.
