End of Reading Rainbow

Passing along because I feel it's worth sharing: The End of Reading Rainbow.

I suppose it comes as no surprise to anyone who knows me that this was one of my favorite shows when I was kid. I can't really say it was responsible for my love of reading, but it certainly helped foster it.

I will say, that while there won't be Reading Rainbow on the air for your children, you could endeavor to have them watch some anyway. Might be difficult, might not work well, but might be worthwhile.

I remember Reading Rainbow quite fondly, watched it all the time.

Well, yes - I imagine I must be able to find videos of Reading Rainbow somewhere to show them. But there's something a little more special in watching it on the air (oh! can't miss Reading Rainbow!) than having it on a shelf of videos you could watch at any time, you know? :)

And, really, the sad part is the education system of the US believing that the obligation to teach reading stops at teaching the mechanics of the system. Fostering a love of reading, in my honest opinion, is equally important. Shows like Reading Rainbow ARE important, just as important as shows like Word World that endeavour to teach you how to read.
