Gorgeous birds. When they all start laying will there be differences in the taste of their eggs (city slicker here).
As I recall you once told me that you are far from Christchurch and therefor far from all the tragedy now happening there. Are there any faults where you live?
I don't know for sure, but I don't think there should be taste differences. There will likely be size differences, shell colour and thickness differences. So far our new fresh Australorp eggs do seem to have a texture difference from store-bought eggs; the egg whites of a laid-this-morning egg aren't as runny and spready in the pan as a boughten egg.
Yeah, we are 150 miles from Christchurch and didn't feel anything, though I hear that in Wellington, 15 miles from us they did feel a tiny bit. There are faults where we live, too, I think.
Fresh eggs taste better. Eggs from hens who have been eating all manner of fresh and tasty things taste better. I wouldn't call it dramatic, but a difference exists.
I don't know that I'd be able to taste it in baked goods, though.
This is so fascinating! A friend of mine is also raising chickens, and has been blogging about it at Serenity Acres (though I think the site is down while they transfer the domain). I never knew there were so many different kinds of chickens before I read her blog...
You might try going to a poultry show; they have them all the time, everywhere (like dog shows) and they have the best looking chickens ever of all kinds. It's a surprisingly amusing day out. ;)
