(Prologue) (Chapter 1) (Chapter 2) (Chapter 3) (Chapter 4) (Chapter 5) (Chapter 6) Chapter 7: The Shock and The Coming Revelation
What had happened in front of his eyes was like a hard blow. He predicted that Yunho might reject the scholarship but he shouldn’t have been affected that bad by his words. He just wanted to tell him that his hate shouldn’t affect his decision. Just what had the boy become for him that he’s so furious to what he was saying? His son… that’s what he called the boy. He saw the physical closeness between those two but he didn’t think that the bond was that strong, after all, the baby was supposed to be a nobody for him!
He watched the crying boy on the hospital bench. He’s still mesmerized at the resemblance between Yunho and the boy. And he seemed to know something that caused the blackout. Heart attack?
“Moonbin…” he wanted to know the truth.
The boy looked up at him with teary eyes.
“What’s going on with Yu-… your father?” He wondered why the kid looked at him suspiciously.
“He- he suffered from heart disease.”
He expected him to say more but he shut his mouth quickly.
“Since when? Had this happened to him before?”
“… Why would you want to know? Who are you? Why did Appa so stressed out after seeing you? Are you really his friend?” Tears forgotten, the tone was thick with accusation.
“I-… I was hi-“
He didn’t get the chance to reply when a voice as sharp as a dagger cut through the hospital corridor. “I believe it’s not your part for explanation, Kim Jaejoong-ssi.”
The boy stood up instantly as soon as he heard that voice and ran to the handsome tall man who just walked in, “Min-ahjussi! Appa! What do we do? I- He- he just-“
The man held the boy in his arms and tried to calm him down. “Hey, easy buddy… he’s going to be alright, I’ll make sure of that. So calm down, I’m here, okay!”
“But I’m so scared… He was fine and then-“ he unconsciously glanced at Jaejoong.
“He’ll be fine…“
The ICU door was opened and a doctor came out, announcing, “Family of Jung Yunho?”
The boy and the man quickly approached her, “I’m his brother, Shim Changmin and this is his son, Jung Moonbin. How is he?”
“I’m dr. Lee and I just want to clarify something with you. Is the patient also under dr. Kang’s treatment?”
Changmin nodded, “He is and actually scheduled for angioplasty soon.”
“Ok, so we have the correct medical records. Looking that it’s his 3rd attack I suggest that he has the angioplasty as soon as possible. Are you the one who’s signing for his papers?”dr. Lee asked Changmin and when he nodded she continued. “Great, if possible, please be available for contact in the next 24 hours. I’m going to get dr. Kang to come here and consult with him on the next step. Once we’re sure that he’s stable and ready for the procedure, we’re going to call you to sign all the necessary documents then we can proceed with it. How’s that sound to you?”
“That’s great, great! I’ll definitely be around and my mobile is in his paper. Thank you doctor.” He shook the doctor’s hand and she smiled at him. “It’s my job.”
She moved to return inside but Moonbin quickly asked her, “Is- is- Appa going to be alright, doctor?”
She turned to look at the worried face of Moonbin. “Don’t worry, your Appa is in good hands. We’ll be in touch with your uncle here, trust us.”
“And when I can see him?”
“As soon as we’re sure that he’s stable and he’s placed in a regular room then you’re free to see him. Ah, in this case, errr….” She looked back at Changmin.
“Changmin, Shim Changmin.”
“Yes, Shim-ssi. Please register him for admission now so they can prepare a room for your brother now. He’ll probably be ready to roll in in another two hours. And we also have detached his prosthesis while we’re trying to resuscitate him, perhaps you want to hold it for your Appa until he comes around?” she kindly patted Moonbin’s back.
“Yeah, I’ll keep it.”
“I’ll ask one of the nurses to give it to you. Now I need to get back in and call dr. Kang. I’ll see you both later.” She turned her heels back inside the ICU. Moonbin returned to his position in Changmin’s arms until a nurse came out with Yunho’s prosthesis.
“Jung-ssi?” She called out and Moonbin ran over to her. “Here you are.” She handed it to him.
Moonbin took it with a quiet ‘thanks’ before she returned back inside.
If what had happened at Yunho’s house shocked him to the core, what had been revealed in front of him in the past 20 minutes were like a dream, that’s what Jaejoong thought. He felt like watching a drama played right before his eyes… heart attack… a long lost son… angioplasty… hospital… and prosthesis? Are they all real?
He watched the boy holding what seemed to be an arm while the other man was holding him in the shoulder. He suddenly felt sick, just what had Yunho been going through all these years? How did it happen? He’s dying to find out but he’s so afraid to ask. Afraid to find out that he might be part of the misfortunes upon the man he loved. He didn’t realize that his curiosity moved his feet in front of the two men.
Only when Changmin spoke to him did he return to his senses.
He didn’t reply but instead staring at the prosthesis in Moonbin’s arms to the point that the boy shifted uncomfortably.
“Something that you want to ask, Kim Jaejoong-ssi?”
“Is… uhm, that thing… is it…?”
“Oh, the prosthesis? Yes, it belongs to my brother. And yes, he doesn’t have a left arm anymore.”
Jaejoong paled.
“Jaejoong-ssi, thank you for coming here with my nephew though you didn’t have to. But I think you’ve done enough. Now that I’m here, I’ll take care of everything. Moonbin, say thanks to Kim-ssi.”
Moonbin hesitantly mumbled his thanks and looked confusedly at his uncle.
“If you excuse us, we only have an hour or so to get the hospital ready for his room. As for the scholarship program, I’ll ask my brother to call you when he recovers. Thank you.” He bowed to him then pulled his nephew on the shoulder, “Come, Bin, let’s get to the admission.”
And they both walked away from the waiting room of the ICU, leaving a stunned and speechless Jaejoong.
Yoochun who had been silent touched his arm, “Jae, let’s get home. I don’t think there’s anything that we can do anymore here. I’ll get someone to monitor his condition and we can come back later.”
“Chun.. he’s- he lost his arm… oh god, what have I done? What had happened to him after I left? Chun- he-“ the bile rose from the back of his throat and he gagged, trying to hold back the vomit in his mouth.
“Jae, what happened to him is not your fault! Get a grip! You didn’t see him for 15 years! There’s nothing you can do about it and it’s clear that his brother and son don’t need your help right now. Come on, let’s get you home then we can talk about it later.” He pulled his arm harder and this time Jaejoong didn’t reject the movement and went along with him, still with a blank look that gave away the turmoil inside his head and pictured hundreds of unanswered questions.

They were waiting inside a VIP room that his uncle had requested for his father. Everything is set and all they have to do now is waiting for him to be rolled in from the ICU. Dr. Kang had arrived and was in a discussion with dr. Lee. They would tell them everything once his father is there.
Moonbin had a hundred questions to ask his uncle and he started with one.
“Min-ahjussi… can I ask you something?” His uncle hummed his approval. “Is Kim Jaejoong-ssi reallyAppa’s friend?”
“They were friends in high school.”
"Why- why did Appa look mad when he came? Did he do something to him before? I mean… he even said that he rejected the scholarship for me.” His confusion cleared.
His uncle sighed. “Bin, as much as I want to tell you, I still think that it’s best if your father tell you himself. It’s not my right to spill the things he kept from you.”
The boy scowled. “I wish I could, but there was so much that he kept secrets from me.” He looked sad. “Min-ahjussi, why wouldn’t he tell me how he get to adopt me? And- why did I never know you until that day Appa got into the accident? I’m not a kid anymore, I think I have the right to know.” He bowed his head down, feeling lost.
“Bin, I don’t think that your father didn’t want to tell you, maybe he’s waiting for the right time. Believe me, he wants you to be happy. I guess it’s about time that you know the truth, you’re not a kid anymore. But he has to tell you everything himself, not through me or anybody else. You can ask him later when he’s settled in here. Ask him nicely, okay? Don’t push. Tell him that you don’t mind to wait until he’s ready to talk to you. Just… don’t stress him out more that he already was. Got it?” He ruffled the boy’s hair and for the first time in the hospital, he smiled back at him, feeling more at ease.
Just then the door was opened and Yunho was rolled in with dr. Kang and dr. Lee as well.
Moonbin took a deep breath as he glanced at his father’s unconscious state and listened to the doctors’ conversation with his Uncle. He would wait until the angioplasty’s over. He would wait, he could do that. He would wait and then talk to his father.
Never did he feel dying inside from just waiting like the way he felt today

Yoochun watched his friend gulped down half a bottle of vodka, and looked like he wasn’t stopping with it. The short stop they made from the hospital resulted several bottles of alcohol in front of him, and two of them were empty already.
Jaejoong looked sick though he wasn’t actually suffered from any illness but more sick from shock. He said he felt like vomiting but apparently it didn’t stop him from emptying the bottles, one by one… It’s impossible to avoid Mrs. Kim’s questions if he brought him home, so he decided to go the one of the hotel that has cooperation with their company. No question asked, no form filled and he managed to bring him to the presidential suite.
He didn’t think that today would end up in a mess. Jaejoong came late because he wanted to prepare himself to look friendly and as casual as he could possibly be in front of Yunho though the emotions wrecked havoc inside his heart and mind. He predicted about the rejection… but not about the heart disease. Or the prosthesis. And if he was in his place, Yoochun wasn’t sure either how he would react to find out so much about Yunho in such a short amount of time. Not to mention to get him admitted into the hospital too. It was a disaster.
His phone rang, it must be Junsu. He actually promised to be home early and he hadn’t answer his call for the past two hours. “Hey babe, I’m sorry I can’t be home soon.”
“… Something happened? You didn’t answer my call at all.” He could hear that Junsu was trying to be patient.
“Yeah, I’ll tell you later but… I can’t leave Jaejoong alone now. I hope you understand!”
“How bad?”
“Let’s say that he’s on his 3rd bottle now, without a space in between bottle.”
A sigh. “Fine. Be careful on your way home. Let me know if you need me to pick you up. Bye.”
“Bye, I love you.” A click.
He walked over to Jaejoong who was ready to open another bottle. He held his hand. “Jae, stop. You’ve had enough.”
“Don’t stop me,” he slurred as he shook his hand off from Yoochun’s grip. “Just, don’t…”
“Jae, the drinks won’t change anything! It wasn’t a dream! Yunho’s been through a lot and that’s not your fault!” He snatched the bottle from his grip.
“What the hell do you know!! You’re not the one leaving him! And I’m not the one losing an arm and living as a store owner to raise a kid that’s not even my blood! So don’t tell me like you know everything!” He reached for another bottle on the floor next to his feet.
Yoochun snatched it once again, preventing him to finishing everything and makes things worse for himself. “Look, I know that I don’t know much more than what you told me! But one thing I know for sure, you both chose your own way, what you believed in! You thought that he would do the same but he didn’t! So what? Were you responsible to what happened later? No!! You had your own life and so did he, with his Son! And his brother! Whatever the reason he lived the way he is right now was not your mistake!”
“I SAID STOP SAYING THINGS AS IF YOU KNOW IT!!!” He threw a bottle to the wall, the glasses and the liquid quickly scattered on the floor. “He- he fucking lost an arm, Chun! He lives a commoner’s life! He doesn’t even have a car and even has to rely on scholarship to put his son into a good school! Damn, that boy’s not even his own son!!” He yelled at him with tears running down his face. “I left him… I didn’t even give him a chance to speak before I walked out the door… I left him Chun… and now I almost get him killed…” He howled as he fell on his knees on the floor.
The sight made him want to cry too. Jaejoong had never much emotion in the years since they’d been friends. The only emotion that he showed was on his father’s funeral. It wasn’t sadness or remorse, more like relieved and satisfaction. The second time was on the day he divorced Choi Eun Hee. There’s a slight of sadness, not for the divorce but more that in the end nothing worked for him. And this overloaded emotions displayed before him tonight was something that made him take pity on his boss slash bestfriend. He crouched down next to him and put his hand on his shoulder as he kept sobbing.
“Jae, let’s talk about it tomorrow. You should get some sleep now… I’ll stay with you.”
He kept lamenting as if he didn’t hear him, “He lost a fucking arm, Chun… he lost and arm… I almost killed him… He almost died right before my eyes… I killed him again, Chun, I killed him again…” And he vomited right there, his stomach couldn’t hold the liquor and the crying. As much as the smell made him sick, it seemed that Jaejoong didn’t even realize it as he fell onto his own puke, losing his strength in his stupor.
“Oh god, Jae! Jae, come on, let me clean you up in the bathroom!” He tried to wake him up to no avail. His friend just laid there helplessly, all tears, puke and whatnot. “Jeez, I can’t do this myself.”
He pulled out his mobile from his pocket and pressed the speed dial. He spoke through the speaker as soon as the party said hello, “Babe, help me! Grand Hyatt, Presidential Suite. Bring me fresh clothes… bring two, Jae will need it. Thanks Babe, love you!” He hung up. He couldn’t be luckier to have Junsu as a lover. He had endless patience and never asked unnecessary questions as he knows Yoochun will tell him in the end anyway.”
He took a deep breath as he tried to pick up Jaejoong on his feet. “I’m going to vomit myself to the smell! Jae, you better return to your old self when you wake up tomorrow.”
He cursed as he accidentally stepped on some glass shreds on the way to the master bedroom from the bottle that Jae threw earlier. He couldn’t wait until Junsu gets there and saves him.

When Yunho woke up that morning he was greeted with brightness, white walls around him and a sleeping Moonbin on the couch. The boy didn’t sleep in the spare bed, he choose the couch so he could see him when he woke up. His brother came later and explained to him everything as he didn’t even remember anything after he passed out.
He told him about the angioplasty plan that he might undergo tomorrow. And also about Moonbin curiosity about Jaejoong and their history, about his origins… He spent a long time hiding everything, but Changmin was right, the boy had the right to find out the truth. He’s growing up, he should be able to handle it. He will tell him that nothing will change how he feels about him… he would always be his boy… his son… the most important person in his life beside Changmin. He wouldn’t be able to hide it any longer now that Jaejoong had showed up into their life.
He watched his son came out from the shower, his wet hair stuck to his temple. “Fresh now?”
“Yeah, it’s already noon. I’m starving… is Min-ahjussi coming later, Appa?” He sat next to his bed.
“He said he will bring your lunch… he asked your noona to cook your favorite food.” He smiled as he reached out his right hand and tried to dry his son’s hair with the towel draped on his shoulder. The boy let him and scooted closer, his back on the bedside. He must’ve felt a little childish.
“Cool! Jihye’s noona’s cooking is great, Appa! Too bad you have to stick to tasteless hospital food.” He teased him. “Don’t envy me later.” And that made Yunho laughed.
After awhile he ruffled his son’s hair, signaling that he’s finished and it’s dry enough now. “So, your uncle told me that you have questions for me?”
Moonbin stopped on his track and turned around to face him.
“Do you… mind? I mean, would you tell me?”
Yunho kept looking at him affectionately. “Come here, I miss you.” He held the boy close to him as he inhaled his fresh from the shower odor. “I’m sorry that I scared you again yesterday.”
“That’s okay… it’s not your fault… and I told you that I’ll be with you no matter what, didn’t I?” He pulled off.
“You did… I’m proud of you. So yes, I’ll tell you whatever you want to know… will you wait after the angioplasty? Can you do that much for me?”
Moonbin smiled, “Sure… I don’t want you to be more sick than you already are. It won’t be long anyway. Thanks Appa.”
“No… thanks for being a good Son. I love you… keep that in your pretty little head… whatever you’re going to hear from me, trust me that nothing’s going to change between us.”
“I trust you.”
And Yunho held on to that promise.
