The Real Battle Just Starts
The surgery took place one week later on Sunday morning. Dr Lim had a tight schedule already on Saturday and she preferred to have it when she’s in her best time to concentrate, she didn’t waste anytime in making arrangement with her team. Moonbin helped to arrange hospital stay. This was the time where Jaejoong felt most grateful for his little family who stood by each other through thick and thin.
Dr. Lim decided to have the surgery morning at 8am, which meant that Yunho should be prepped by 6am. They checked in into the hospital on Saturday noon, with Yunho fussing about his choice for VIP Room. Too expensive to his liking, in the end they settled with a first class room with single occupation, a sofa next to his bed and a little balcony for two people to get fresh air. It was uncomfortable for Jaejoong who had to sleep on the sofa but he didn’t say anything. He just wanted to make sure that Yunho’s in good mood before the surgery.
Since on Sunday morning everyone went to church, there were only him and Moonbin when his husband was being wheeled into the surgery room at 7am. He didn’t stop whispering encouragement in Yunho’s ear while Moonbin kept telling him to ‘get over it and win’. The clock struck 8 right on the dot and the lamp outside the surgery room lit up. The waiting started.
Changmin came around 10 with coffee but Jaejoong was too nauseous to drink any. He’s never good at waiting, Yunho was. But he sent Moonbin to wait at the cafeteria with Yoochun, Junsu and some other close friends who had come to comfort them. He was a mess before 11am and almost had a shock when someone got out from the surgery room.
“Mr. Jung Yunho’s family? Is there Mr. Jung Yunho’s family here?” a nurse in white called out.
He stood up shakily and approached her. “I’m his family. What’s going on?”
She nodded at him sympathetically, “Dr. Lim needs to update you with an important matter regarding Mr. Jung’s surgery. Please wait while I called her.” And she disappeared again behind the door.
“Min, call Moonbin to get here! I don’t want to hear whatever she’s going to say without him.” He sat on the waiting room chair. He knew something was wrong, he knew it was worse than what his husband told him.
Moonbin came running with Yoochun in tow. “What’s up Daddy?” And the door was opened once again, Dr. Lim came out with a grim face.
Jaejoong just stared at her, not dare to ask her anything.
“Mr. Jung, we almost completed the surgery but…” She breathed deeply, “Apparently the cancer has spread further than we anticipated. It’s spread behind his colons thus the MRI didn’t show it clearly. However my team and I have tried our best to take out all the cancerous parts and sterilized the area where it has spread.”
His knees buckled and Changmin quickly caught him from falling while Moonbin kept a steady gaze at the doctor but his hands looked out for his Daddy’s to hold.
“And that means?”
She looked at him straight in the eyes, “There’s a possibility of a relapse when the part that’s left behind gets active. And when that happens, he can’t say no to chemotherapy anymore and this time I suggest additional radiation from the inside instead of outside.” She bowed deeply in front of him and his son, “My apology for having to inform you this and for not looking further into the examination, Mr. Jung, Mr. Park.” He also addressed Yoochun since he’s the one who recommended her after Dr. Kang.
Moonbin swallowed hard, “It’s not your fault Dr. Lim, we’ve seen the MRI result together and you’ve been helping us a lot.”
“Now please allow me to continue to finalize the surgery and I’ll see you again when it’s over.” She bowed once again and gone. Back to where his husband was lying helplessly.
“Come on Jae, he won’t be taken out until another couple of hours, let’s just wait at the room or the cafeteria.” Yoochun helped him on his feet but Jaejoong refused, he sat himself back on the waiting room chair again.
“He lied to me, didn’t he? I knew that it was worse than what he told me but I let him lied.” He spoke in monotonous voice to no one in particular. “He never looked to vulnerable like he was when he went to see Dr. Lim last week. It must’ve been painful for him.”
Moonbin didn’t say anything and just walked out of the waiting room, maybe he needed time to comprehend the whole ordeal. Changmin followed him while Yoochun stayed with Jaejoong.
“Jae, don’t blame him. You have to understand that he just didn’t want to worry you more than you already did.”
“I know Chun, I know. But I wish he could’ve trusted me more to help him. We vowed to make this our family battle!”
“Jae, you knew what Dr. Lim meant though, didn’t you?”
“How long do you think he has Chun?”
“No one knows… miracle does happen, Jae. The real battle starts now.”
“Yeah…” he whispered softly, “It just starts…”
It’s been less than a year since they found out about Yunho’s cancer but it felt like they’ve been sailing through the storm for 10 years. And this time the rainbow refused to show up.
