It could just be the pressure from the goggles. It usually takes trying about 2 or 3 pairs actually in the water for a long swim before you find a pair that are comfortable for you. You'll also be surprised just how much energy you expend swimming and resulting dehydration. Make sure you drink plenty before a long swim, and take a bottle to the pool to keep at the end of your lane. Good luck with the sprint training. Make sure you get plenty of speed training in. Pretty much anyone in half decent shape can finish a sprint, but if you want to compete, you have to train to be able to work at max threshold. Lactate baby, learn to love it!
