DSL is down and we're trying Dogbert's tech support recommendations. Right now we're at step 8, defrosting the refrigerator. (Actually its the server; hard to pipe electrons here to the back of beyond.)

At least the woods are pretty this time of year.

We had some quiet time but the whippoorwill came back tonight. Poor Jack barked for a minute but soon realized it was the same bird. So now he's sulking. He realizes he'll never even see it much less catch it.

Jack is much calmer tonight. I have no idea why, unless it is Ms. TK's quieting influence. The whippoorwill is back, much louder and Jack has ignored it except for a couple of barks when it first started. Ms TK thought I was playing a .wav file on the computer to annoy him ( Read more... )

Here is a copy of the turtle picture from the previous post, with the critter circled in red. Hard to believe there's a turtle there! Mammalian carnivores have less color vision than humans so for them a turtle would tend to just blend in to the surrounding woodlands. ( Read more... )

He's upstairs running around and barking like mad. There is a whippoorwill on the hill right behind the house and it is whipping Will as fast as it can. Jack can't stand it. Dogs have great hearing so they can hear things we can't, so imagine what it would be like to have a whippoorwill amplified a dozen fold ( Read more... )

The cows are getting overly assertive so that Ms. TK is becoming afraid of them. Mary Ann sometimes acts as if she's going to kick (lets face it, she's kicked at me twice in the past 3 months) and even Ginger sometimes pushes to get her sweet feed. This weekend the fire department turned out for a training exercise to burn down a 60+ year old falling-down house on the hayfield we bought this winter. They actually had 4 trucks and members of 3 departments. The only really bad moment was when one of the rookies panicked and nearly knocked down the three guys backing him up.
