and all the awards Yixin cocks her head. “You’re not here to practice,” she says.
“What? No. Of course I am,” replies Sehun calmly, but the shuffling of his feet gives him away. They’ve long mastered the choreography for their Into Your World duet, blocking changes and synchronization and all, yet Sehun had invited Yixin to the studio to rehearse again for their upcoming performance.
“Tell me, Sehun,” the girl whispers as she closes in on him, dance shoes padding softly against the parquet. “Why are you really here?”
Sehun lets out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding, refusing to meet her eyes. “Maybe I… I wanted to see you.”
“I’m here.” Yixin goes on tiptoe then and it’s almost as if she can read Sehun’s mind. She’s always been good at reading people.
The door is locked and that’s the main reason why Sehun wraps his arms around her waist when she kisses him softly. It’s just a small peck, an innocent press of lips, but Sehun’s cheeks heat up immediately. A part of him has the presence of mind to wonder whether it’s only because he’s a hormonal young man, or whether it’s because he likes Yixin quite a lot.
Yixin is undoubtedly attractive even if she’s not as tall as Chanyeon or as curvy as Kyungsoon. The Chinese girl is all precision and strength and toned limbs, and she carries herself with the grace of a true dancer when she’s not being endearingly dorky. Sehun appreciates that she’s one of the few people who actually listens to him when he needs to be listened to. Sometimes the other members mistake his behavior for brattiness, but during those times, Yixin knows better.
“There’s something on your mind,” she mutters against his lips, “and I don’t think it has anything to do with how you plan on undressing me later.”
Sehun pulls away but his hands stay on her hips. “Noona, I...“ he starts, but doesn’t know how to continue. Yixin is right, there is something on his mind, but this time he’s not sure whether she should hear it.
He lets her lace those slender fingers of hers through his hair, closing his eyes as she gently massages his scalp. They’re both a little sweaty and Sehun is pretty sure that any other girl would be grossed out at feeling his perspiration, but Yixin doesn’t seem to mind.
“Relax. You’re so tense. I can practically feel your nerves.”
“I’m sorry,” Sehun blurts out.
“What for?”
He gulps audibly. “I don’t know.”
Sehun might not know but somehow, by some miracle of God, Yixin does. She chuckles and when Sehun finally opens his eyes, he’s met with the sight of her slightly wry smile. Yixin shakes her head. “You shouldn’t be doing this to yourself.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Of course you don’t,” Yixin affirms enigmatically, stepping away. “That’s why noona has to kick you along a bit.” She cocks her head again. “Answer me honestly, Sehun. Do you like me?”
At that moment, Sehun wants to kick himself because he should have seen this coming. “I do,” he insists.
“There’s a ‘but’ though,” continues the girl, turning away a little. “There’s always been a ‘but’, hasn’t there?”
When Sehun doesn’t answer, because he can’t bring himself to, Yixin just takes his hand. He flushes deeper.
“Don’t be afraid to say it,” she says, rubbing circles into the back of his hand, as if she’s comforting him. It has never been her duty to comfort him, but she has always risen to the occasion. “What’s the ‘but’?”
“Noona, I like you. I really do, but,” Sehun finally looks into her eyes, and the knowing look she already has on her face strikes him. “I like someone else too.”
“There we go,” says Yixin after a short pause. “Doesn’t it feel much better now that you’ve let it out?”
“But. I’m sorry, I-“
She places a finger against his lips to quiet him. “I’m glad. I’m glad you said it so that we can clear things up between us. I don’t think we would have worked out anyway, Sehun. Three-way relationships aren’t my thing.”
Sehun isn’t sure if she’s meant it jokingly, or if he should laugh to ease the tension, so he just apologizes again. What kind of idiot has feelings for two girls at the same time?
“It’s quite clear that you like one person more than the other, though,” smiles Yixin, her voice thin. “And that person isn’t me.”
“What should I do?” asks Sehun. It’s slightly embarrassing, how he’s still asking Yixin for advice when he probably just upset her, but if he doesn’t ask now he never will.
“You should tell her,” Yixin states plainly. Funny how she can make everything sound so simple. “And you should also be grateful that I don’t plan on pulling a Taylor Swift and writing a ‘Tears Airport Part 2' about you or something.”
The chuckle that escapes Sehun is joined by Yixin’s own tired giggle. “That settles it, I guess,” he says, sheepishly rubbing his arms. “I’m sorry-”
“Stop apologizing.” She smacks him lightly on the arm, not enough to hurt. “Just promise me that you won’t ask me to practice alone with you again. Or for a while, at least.”
Sehun lets himself be ushered towards the practice room door as Yixin throws him his backpack, that oddly heart-wrenching smile still on her face.
“I’ll try, noona,” he says, and this time he means it.
