Previously... Sheldon didn’t come to watch a DVD with Penny that night - which was too bad as she had to watch The Lake House again by herself, and she did so love torturing him with it. He did text her to let her know he was working.
The next morning, after a quick shower to shake the slight hangover from the bottle of wine she watched her DVD with, Penny dressed and went over to find Sheldon for his next to last driving lesson before his test.
During the day.
She knocked on the door three times, because Sheldon needed to be calm and he was always a bit frantic when she just walked in. He answered the door, and moved aside to let her in, but didn’t say a word.
Oh yeah, he was terrified.
“Sheldon sweetie, are you ready to go?” Penny nudged his shoulder with her palm to get him moving.
He found his voice, “Are you certain this is a wise course of action? Perhaps I really don’t need my driver’s licence…” Sheldon’s voice trailed off.
Penny nudged harder, “Yes you do. C’mon,” He stated to move with her this time, “it won’t be too busy, but you have to drive during the day.”
Sheldon allowed her to push him out of his door, and he followed her, as willingly as he was able, to the basement where her car was parked.
“Okay, the driver’s seat is yours. You need to be able to get out of and into parking spots too.” Penny handed him her keys as she sat in the passenger side.
He accepted them from the driver’s seat and looking warily at her, “Alrighty,” he began and started up her car, “I just hope we can hang on to your last side mirror in the process.”
Penny smiled wide as he managed, slowly, eternally, to get her car out of Robles Drive parking lot. He pulled out into the road, “What is our destination?” He asked, hands firmly set at 10 and 2.
“It’s a beautiful day, Sheldon!” Penny spread her arms wide from the passenger seat, “I feel like it’s a perfect day for…the Santa Monica pier!”
Sheldon is horrified, “Santa Monica? That’s over 20 miles from here!”
“Aww, c’mon,” Penny smiles, “It’s a sunny day, the roads are clear. Keep an even 50mph, and we’ll be there in half an hour.” She smiles even brighter, “I feel like a Coney dog and ice cream.”
Sheldon sighs deep, and then carefully makes a lane change to get on the 110 to Santa Monica. Penny is right; the road is clear and he can feel his anxiety leave him-at least to a lesser degree.
Sheldon is thinking while driving, which has left Penny thankfully quiet on the way. He considers why is it that he acquiesces to Penny’s requests so easily? With driving lessons, when he really didn’t need to drive, a party he really doesn’t want and now this - a half an hour drive to Santa Monica - and back? Perhaps he can talk her into driving back.
He looks quickly over to her to ask, and her eyes are closed and she’s lightly dozing. He
turns back to the road ahead of him and feels a small smile creep on his lips.
Great teacher she is.
