They get to the pier in 45 minutes, because really, 50mph is really quite fast. Penny has been lightly sleeping for the entire trip. The only reason he knows he can wake her easily is that she is not snoring.

He touches her shoulder softly, “Penny?”

Penny startles and sits up straight, “A-what, hunh?” She is disoriented for a minute, until she can smell the water and can almost taste the food aroma that is wafting in the car. “You drove us here while I slept?”

“Apparently.”

They are also parked, perfectly aligned, in the car park. “Sheldon? You did great!” She throws her arms suddenly, and without thinking around his shoulders - practically bear hugging him, “You are so ready for your driver’s test next week!”

Sheldon shrugs, as much as he can with her arms tightly around him and blushes slightly at the praise, “I suppose so.”

Penny lets him loose and opens her car door, “C’mon - rides, Coney dogs and ice cream!” She
skips along to the carnival ahead, while Sheldon follows her, excited despite himself.

Penny has a roll of tickets in her hands before he catches up to her. “Okay, I love the Ferris Wheel and the Tilt-a-Whirl, while you join me?"

“Of course,” He nods, with a touch of enthusiasm; he does love that Ferris Wheel. Penny heads for the Tilt-a-Whirl first and Sheldon follows her again.

Soon after, Penny’s hair is blowing in his face, her hand is grasping his bicep and she’s laughing into the wind.

Sheldon is grinning widely, again unclear how he has wound up here today with her, but her hair smells good, her smile is engaging, and Sheldon is having-fun. They dizzily exit the ride, still clinging to one another to steady themselves.

The Ferris Wheel is close to stopping for the next group in line, so Penny and Sheldon join them in their wait.

Penny smiles, “See, wasn’t this a good idea?”

“I have to admit it was. I’ve had three ideas to correct my theorem since that last ride.”

She laughs and holds his arm, “Well glad I could help.” She leans up, and can’t quite help it, she kisses his cheek. “See. Fresh air and a little fun, and you can figure out the universe.”

Their line moves, which is good, because Sheldon is speechless. At this moment, he thinks that Leonard and his mother are wrong.

Amy isn’t the girl for him.

He joins Penny in the seat on the ride, and they are secured in for the duration. The wheel moves and the wind is warm on their faces.

“Penny,” Sheldon begins, “would one consider the pier is an acceptable place for a date?”

Penny goes from smiling into the wind, to darting her eyes to him -her forehead wrinkling, “Yeah, I guess it is.” He’ll have his driving licence by next week, Penny thinks, Sheldon can take Amy anywhere he likes. Her stomach drops, and it’s not from the down swing of the wheel.

Her hand is right next to his, and he moves his infinitesimally so that his pinkie overlaps hers, “Thank you Penny.”
