BBC Sherlock--the CV (resumé) revealed!!

Aug 30, 2012 01:16

Wow, am I really posting twice in one day? Incredible!! I got hit with a sudden brainstorm, though (inspired by the genius work of wellingtongoose, found in this post), and decided to try my hand at making a transcript of Dr. John Watson's resumé (or CV, as the Brits like to call it) as it appears in the episode The Blind Banker.

Update: Now available on A03 ( ( Read more... )

The years of his schooling are very interesting, because they make him out to be much younger than indicated elsewhere in the show. If he was in grammar school between 1994 and 1999, then that means he born sometime in 1980 or '81 - but there's a screencap of one of the newspaper articles that pegs his age in 2010 as 37, which means he was born in 1973. I wonder what's up with the discrepancy?

Somewhere else someone commented on this. I'm sure that the actual explanation is simply human error--somebody made a miscalculation and didn't catch it (or copy/pasted and then neglected to edit the dates properly?). Of course, it's all canon now, errors or no!

I figure a really picky fan could reconcile the info somehow, to her own liking. John making multiple typos on the CV? (Maybe Sherlock was being particularly distracting that day!) A childhood illness that kept John out of school for several years early on, so that he was consistently much older than his classmates? Who knows?

The info (such as the newspaper article) that makes him out to be older is clearly correct, or more nearly so. I have no beef with an actor born in 1971 playing one who was born two years later, but ten years?? I don't buy it at all.

...Er, I do feel I have to add a caveat here, though. If canon were ever to claim that Sherlock is actually ten years (or nearly so) younger than Benedict, I'd happily believe it. He is deliberately styled (the haircut, ( ... )

Benedict could...but I'm not sure that Mark Gatiss could, and it's both show and ACD canon that Mycroft is seven years older. I'm not entirely sure that I'd believe that Mycroft is in his early thirties - that's a bit of a stretch.

I agree, it's more than likely human error, and whoever typed it up (and then OK'd it for use) either didn't realize that the CV would actually show up on screen, or that there would be legions of fans inspecting every line for clues. (Well, maybe they hoped for the latter, and were counting on not having the former ( ... )

Absolutely, the discrepancies in John's backstory are pretty overwhelming, especially under scrutiny. Have you seen these posts ( ... )

I really like it, maybe if you can match his age to 1973 to 1975 for his born year i think this will be

Also now that i remember he made a practice at Barts were he met Mike Stanford, some one ask this to wellingtongoose and she said than some of the King's College made courses and practices in Barts and viceversa, so maybe John has a semester there in practice. I think this is important because is part of the plot in ASiP and his background in general and how he is familiarized with Barts.

But i find your CV awesome!

Also don't be so bad with Martin 1971 is an awesome year to be born and if he born is 1973 it means he enters Uni in 1991 or 1992 that makes sense because in 1995 King's College and Barts make one school, so the CV would be wrong other wise...
In exact years wise John now is 39, but like is a little time strange... We need to know how many years pass between so 38-39

Thanks for your kind words regarding my work!

I agree that it's very difficult to reconcile the dates on this document with John's backstory, but I've done my best to re-create the exact text of the prop document filmed for the Blind Banker scene. Most likely, someone simply didn't bother to give that document the proper dates.

I'm pretty sure wellingtongoose is working on a new post which will attempt to somehow reconcile these dates with John's background. Should be very interesting!
