Pretty Pretty Princesses.

I am looking for movies, preferably princessy movies, that will appeal to a very smart three year old and that do not have a negative gender message. Brad's niece, Mo, and I have watched Enchanted about a squillion times, and while we both love it, I imagine she's going to get bored with it before too terribly long. I'd like to have something ( Read more... )

Penelope might be a little mature for her, but it's an adorable movie where the "princess" saves herself :) It's about a girl cursed with a pig's nose, and the only way to remove the curse is to be "loved by one of her own kind".

Oh, that sounds like fun. I'll have to find that and watch it before I show it to her, but having to pre-watch doesn't sound like a chore. :)

Seconded on "Mulan" as far as Disney princesses. Also in the Disney vein, "Tinkerbell" surprisingly isn't that bad. (There's a new one that just came out that I haven't seen; I'm talking about one that's just called "Tinker Bell.") It's guilty of a lot of the same oversimplification as any Disney movie, but there's no sign of anyone rescuing Tink, and not even the slightest glimmer of a romantic interest.

Mo has a Tinkerbell movie, something about a treasure hunt, that I think is relatively recent. We started it the last time she was here and I was absolutely enchanted by it. I'll look for the one you mention, too. It sounds perfect.

Also? I've never really needed an excuse to indulge my love of fairy-tale type movies, but having a reason to find them rocks. Does Toni like this sort of thing?

Does Toni like that sort of thing?Uh, just a little. We went to Disney World a couple weeks ago, and as far as she was concerned we could pretty much have flown down for the princess breakfast and come right back ( ... )

I don't have a movie suggestion, but The Paperbag Princess is a book that does the exact same job, and does it very directly and bluntly. Highly recommend it for princessly girl reading.

Oh, excellent! That'll go on my Christmas list for her. I love giving books as gifts, and it sounds exactly right.

I'm thinking it would be. It's not a big book or a chapter book, but she's probably still at an age where this level of reading wouldn't be challenging, but satisfying.

And that's exactly what I'm looking for for her. I don't want to load her up with something that will seem like a chore to get through. I want her to have movies and stories that delight her.

I went to track comments, and the track comments page gives me the option to track by tags.  Your first tag?  "14-year-old-hookercon".  *snorts*

regyt mentioned to me that you might appreciate/get ideas from this post.

That was my post about going to an amusement park where every young teen girl I saw seemed to be dressed for a trollop-themed costume contest.

That post is fantastic. I did get a lot of great ideas from it and I've bookmarked it to go back to later, too.
