Honeymoon planning: Melbourne

Jun 14, 2009 20:04

Shout out for help and recommendations pretty please! (*ahem* hypodermically  *cough* coern ...)

1) Where to stay in Melbourne?
- CBD? St Kilda's?
- We're thinking since it's honeymoon, at least a nice 3/3.5* B&B, if we can't fit the fancy places into budget.

2) What's it like during AFL Grand Finals?
- Where's the best place to go to soak in atmosphere? Or is it best ( Read more... )

Haha I recommend this place to everyone who asks about Melbourne: this restaurant called Pure South on Southbank.  Everything they serve there either comes from Tasmania, or is fished from the waters of the Bass Straight next to Tasmania.  And the food is really good!

Other than that, the only other recommendations I have are the usual Old Melbourne Gaol, Lygon Street for Italian coffee, Greek food at the Greek quarter (can't remember which street it is), and of course, driving down to the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles (I did it on an overnight trip).

Have a good one!

Ooh fresh fish always sounds good! Roughly how much should we expect to spend a meal at Pure South btw? The website looks like it's a step below fine dining, but I'm not sure what the Melbourne price ranges for fine / step-below restaurants are like.

Thanks! :)

Er... I can't really remember cos I was there in 2005, but I think it was around $30s to $40s for a main?  But yeah it's like a step below fine dining, like eating at Greenwood Fish Market or Menotti, those kind of places.

And damn I meant 'Strait', not 'Straight', argh!!

I located a DFO at Spencer Street - was it there when you were there? Worth going?

yes actually DFO at spencer is good only because its more fashion forward in terms of recent range of clothes, but the one nearer the airport is better - more choices, older stock = cheaper!

stay in the cbd - you can get everywhere else with trams and its easy to walk out to the main shopping areas :)

go watch a match at the MCG - footie is so much more action packed than soccer and eating fries while watching the match is terrific! i think tickets can be bought at one of the myer dept stores.

italian food at lygon, coffee at any of the small cafes you come across... shopping is EVERYWHERE, literally. budget lots of time for that. and i hear driving out to the great ocean road is one of the best things to do (didn't do that last time).

MCG - I'm definitely dragging CS for a tour at the MCG, but unfortunately we're going to be there during the footie Grand Finals so no chance of getting to watch a match live. :/

Shopping - heh, did you guys hit an DFOs, or just wandered in and out of the dept stores and little shops?

That's like trying for Wimbledon Finals tickets.... which are only available because they keep some for rabid fans to queue overnight(s) for!

Thanks Pam! The recommendation for Gordon Place is especially useful - I've been stalled so far as I don't know many names apart from the big hotel chains! We've been scouring stayz for Yarra & Mornington, should have used it for Melbourne city too. :) Bad thing about it is that the website doesn't seem to agree with my browser or something, my enquiries keep failing. Oh well, will figure it out. :D
