raise the dead

Tonight I was going to go see We Are Scientists after attending a reading of a new play at Portland Center Stage that my former acting prof was in. I ended up eating Voodoo Doughnuts for dinner and drinking wine with some friends instead. HOWEVER, tomorrow night I am absolutely going to see Phantom Planet, for I already have my ticket. I have ( Read more... )

I'm dying to see Phantom Planet. Their new album is so fucking good! Too bad on We Are Scientists. We're going to see them in August at the Magic Stick. What do you think of their new album? At first, I hated it. But it has grown on me significantly, though "Chick Lit" rips off the riff from Daft Punk's "Robot Rock", which is a sample of something else.

Phantom Planet will making their third visit to Michigan in August(I think), but sadly in a supporting role, opening for The Rocket Summer. They also opened for Paramore(FAIL) and Panic At The Disco(DOUBLE FAIL). Maybe one day they'll be headliners again.

wtf! openers?? Opening for teen bands?!?
I actually kind of like Paramore and Panic, but not nearly as much as Phantom Planet. I'm not familiar with The Rocket Summer - do you like them much? PP is headlining here, and actually at the same venue where we saw We Are Scientists and Art Brut last year.

I haven't heard We Are Scientists' new album yet... um, I kind of forgot there was one. Thanks for reminding me! I need to get on that. Do love the new PP though, fo' sho'. Did you happen to know that Do The Panic was a B-side on their second album, The Guest? Too overshadowed by California at the time though, I guess.

Here's something funny: when I try to think of the title of their new album, for some reason I keep thinking of Shake the Sheets before I remember Raise the Dead. But that was a good one, too.

I'm not much of a fan of Phantom Planet before the self titled record from 2004. But that new album, howdy do.
The Rocket Summer is essentially one guy. He's got a bunch of albums(at least one album was rattling around WLSO)but all his stuff is essentially Christian tinged, like a subtly religious Ben Folds. A lot songs sound like they're about girls and then you realize, "Wait a second, this is about Jesus, isn't it? Grarr." He's also very earnest, which I just can't take at all.

I will give Paramore one point(and only one!) for "That's What You Get". I kinda love that song actually. But everything else, forget it.

In regards to Panic, well, no comment.

Phantom Planet: I know dude, I remember at least one conversation in the QD where you were talking about how you didn't like them til that self-title, and I was all no they've been great all along and you were all pffff Jason Schwartzman and I was like YEAH Jason Schwartzman or something and so on.

Paramore: What makes that song better than any of the others? I don't really get it. I didn't even know that was a single (is it? maybe it's not? see I don't know).
I heard "Misery Business" first, and Casey likes this one part in the video where it looks like the guitarist punches the singer in the face with his guitar and she just goes along with it because they are rocking out. It is just very rock and roll. And I love to sing/play "Crushcrushcrush" on Rock Band. The rest of the album has been slowly growing on me.

Random: did you ever hear/listen to Ettison Clio? Sort of in the same vein as Paramore but less poppy and more from Michigan.

DUDE! !! you don't even know. Because the very next night (which was just tonight, just now), Phantom Planet invited the whole audience of their show (well the 21+ part of the audience) to this bar afterward, and on their way there they stopped and bought about a gajillion Voodoo Doughnuts for all the fans! There turned out to only be like 10 of us or fewer, so we gave away a lot of the doughnuts to strangers at the bar, and got in trouble multiple times for trying to bring doughnuts into the bar. I told Alex to play the Rock Star card but he was too humble and it may not have made a difference anyway. But there you go. Voodoo Doughnuts, two nights in a row, the second night with/from one of my favorite bands. Huzzah!

Last night I had the Memphis Mafia and a Portland Cream.
Tonight I had one with coconut and one that was just chocolate cake. yummm
