After Dinner Men

Dec 02, 2004 11:52

Before I'd even fully swallowed my goodly share of Mears' fancy swill, supper was over and the room just plum cleared out. No introductions, no allusions to what made an alliance an alliance -- or even this an alliance -- not even further civilities beyond "mmm, this is tasty" and "pass the salt." Supper was just over, scant moments after it began ( Read more... )

"Y'all excuse me for a moment? Nature calls and I'm off to use the head."I shrugged in Caleb's direction, keeping a careful eye on the surly blonde Billy Idol wannabe sitting next to me. Caleb seemed wary of him too, although I wasn't sure at all why the hell this should matter to me ( ... )

Somethin' was definitely up with this Preacher bloke. Seemed he was talkin' to someone behind the angry guy sittin' next t'me. Funny, he didn't seem the crazy sort straight off, and if anyone knew somethin' 'bout loons it would be the guy that dated one for several decades, eh? No, there was too much sense and purpose in his eyes, creepy as they were, for him to be completely off his nut. But he seemed human, so far as I could tell. There was something else to him, all right, and it wasn't somethin' all good and wholesome and holy, I'll tell you that.

"Y'all excuse me for a moment? Nature calls and I'm off to use the head."

"Yeah, you have fun with that then, mate."

I nodded to him, turning to look over my shoulder some as he left. Freaky fucker, that one was. I felt a lot more comfortable after he'd left. It was like he took some unseen presence away with him and suddenly I could breathe again. Not that I was breathin', mind you.

"Fucking Warren, huh? Like I'm really supposed to give a fuck about his top-secret bullshit. They're ( ... )

I like this supposed holy man. Quite a bit. When I first found him, to be honest, I wasn't entirely sure that I'd be too fond of his company. At the time it hadn't mattered, because I thought him a pawn of mine to move across my personal chessboard at will and sacrifice whenever the need arose. No one cares about their pawns or what they say or think. They exist to do a job for you, whether willingly or otherwise, and to serve as an extra barrier between yourself and the enemy ( ... )

The Lady grinned broadly up at me and it warmed me in the best and most wicked ways. Or perhaps it was the hooch doing the warming. Didn't matter much, because Her approval was a special kind of grace that I needed in my days. I smiled back at Her and wished for the millionth time that She had some kind of hand that I could take ( ... )

"Am I wrong, or are strange things afoot at the castle? What was that dinner all about? No introductions, no offers, no nothin'... am I meant to assume that I am part of the team? What are they talking about up there? What is it that I'm to do here?""Oh, they're just this and that. It's amazing the things boredom can drive a man to. And for the man who has everything, well, he can find some pretty interesting ways to amuse himself. He controls so much, yet still falls prey to the same temptations that your average Joe would ( ... )

As typical, The Lady only told me what I most needed to know. Connections, resources, power... but nothing named. No hard facts. No literal instructions as to how I would identify and possess these resources ( ... )
