Knitting A Skirt Using Scrap Yarn

Mar 21, 2014 14:15

For something completely different, I just posted a knitting pattern for a skirt that I made on Tumblr. Thought I'd share, because a) it's a very pretty skirt indeed and I'm very proud of my freestyle knitting :p and b) maybe one of you will have use for it, too.

The Tumblr post is here, featuring bigger pictures.

I'm impressed! Those colors work very well together. I especially like the green at the bottom. And I like the black tights and sweater with it.

While reading Spin Control I kept thinking that Finnick and Haymitch need more hobbies. Finnick especially needs something to do with his hands now that he doesn't get to repair/make nets all the time. I kept thinking that Mags should send them yarn and knitting instructions. They think it's funny, but they fool around with it one day during the winter when they are shut in during a snowstorm and Finnick is really antsy because he can't go running. They end up kind of enjoying it. Finnick especially becomes a bit obsessive about it (because of course) and insists on making Haymitch scarves and sweaters.

I also think they need a pet or two. For some reason I can see Haymitch as a cat person. Finnick, more of a dog person, but I think he'd get along with anything.

My mind, it is a strange place.

Hey, I wanted to reply to this because the whole hobbies/interests thing came up in another discussion of ours a while back, and I never really got to reply to it. So I thought I'd get some of the stuff in my head out on paper, so to speak ( ... )

I also tend to think that people that strictly adhere to typical gender behaviors tend to be a bit more limited as people, not as smart, less interesting. It's just a prejudice of mine, possibly because in North America gender norms seem to be very narrow for men. Not that they aren't everywhere, but in America a guy can't wear a nice scarf without getting the side-eye. One of my best friends did an internship in a small town in Iowa. Some of his associates helped him move in. He shortly realized that they were sure he was gay because he had a lot of boxes of books but no football paraphernalia. And my friend is someone who has a pretty solid, masculine presence, IMO. Anyway, I think I am sensitive to this issue because I like ferreting all the different quirks that make up someone's personality. I think I also base some of my ideas about guys and interests on my husband, who is a great example of someone who is such a typical guy in many respects and yet has some totally atypical interests. He is incredibly smart and loves to fix and ( ... )

I'm glad that our gender types aren't as crass here, yeah. You can see a shift in the 15 - 30-year-olds, how skin care and hair care and fashionable clothes that fit have become a thing that's just expected if you want to be attractive to a girl. Last weekend when watching soccer, I found very curious an ad during a commercial break that advertised shoes to teenage boys. "You have to buy good shoes because girls look at the shoes first," was the message, "and girls love our shoes." You used to get that message for women exclusively, "wear this so that the men will find you attractive." But this sells for boys now.

Haymitch said to Finnick in SC, I think in chapter 10, that he likes mending things although he sucks at it. So he might find knitting satisfying, but he might not be necessarily good at it. It just can make your hands cramp something awful, even I have that problem with my girl hands. And it can be quite frustrating, because it's so easy to fuck up. It takes a while until you reach that point when it feels soothing.

Hmmm, so other hobbies...I can see them fixing up Haymitch's house together. Like, they do some painting or something, fix furniture, etc. which looks even weirder to the district. Haymitch is in charge of the colors. I also wonder if Finnick might be into carving, stuff that he can do with his hands ( ... )

Finnick could totally get into carving, if it would ever occur to him to do so.

Finnick would totally learn knife throwing, using Games school as an excuse. :D He'd probably surpass Haymitch in skill very quickly because Haymitch doesn't see the point in improving, but he'd just snort if Finnick acted abashed about it. ;)

Believe it or not, I don't do board games 'cause trigger reactions, so that's gonna be a firm no from me on that front. Heh.

They could play strip poker. I can totally see that happening. Haymitch would have the better poker face, any day. :D

Heh, I am back home and my husband is traveling for business this week (he normally works at home, he's a technology consultant, but sometimes clients want him on-site) and I am taking a day of from life. One of my best friends had emergency quadruple-bypass surgery last week, and I have been alternately freaking out about him almost dying and trying to be as supportive as possible, and freaking out about my own mortality. We met my freshman year of college, he's my age. I don't know when we got so old ( ... )
