That explains a lot! leroy484 September 22 2003, 11:46:41 UTC
I grew up spending lots of time in an old library. My grandfather had a building that he leased to LA County for a library, and I'd spend most of the time there when my folks were visiting him. I still love the smell of aged tomes.

Fun article! Perhaps this explains my hard-back book edition. I've always thought older books smelled of greater mysteries...

Me too! Now we're only drug addicts, rather than seekers of the greater mysteries. Oh well.

I'll believe that when I see people selling books on ebay listed as "first edition, good ergot culture, must inhale to believe"... I think we're safe in our musty proclivites: the scent of old books always made me feel like I was experiencing something precious and rare and all the more special.

Mass market paperbacks don't have the same appeal but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before books are scented with "new book" scent as a marketing ploy in the same way cars are scented in new car scent...and if they flood casinos with extra oxygen, I'm sure the shops and malls are next. (Sigh)

you're in luck! venusprime September 27 2003, 19:58:15 UTC
hey, now you have a perfect excuse for hanging onto those old weird mildewed tomes!

for my part, the library at City College SF is redolent with mold, and it's only getting worse.

for the home environment, if it gets out of hand there are a few home-remedies. But they are pretty foul themselves. formaldehyde in a coffee can (about an inch) left in each corner of the room with all the windows and doors shut...leave it for a few days, then return and completely air out the place for several hours with fans.

the stuff stinks, but if the mold has gotten into wood, carpet or other furnishings it is about all you can do to eradicate it yourself. it kills things, so remove any plants, fish, pets, etc.
