I fell in love with Portland the weekend I spent there. There was a bar with good music ... I don't remember what it was called, but I think it was red, and it had some sort of tropical bird painted on the side (it's such a small town, if you drive around, you can't miss it). There's an indoor farmer's market of sorts that was really great. There's a planetarium. And it's really just such a pretty town to drive around ... views of the ocean pop up everywhere.
Other than that, though, I haven't been to Maine either.
Crystal and I took a drive up route 1. Goes through portland, then Yarmouth and Freeport. Freeport is the giant open-24-hours L.L. Bean store, and close by my cousins converted a beautiful barn into a glass blowing studio and store. I could find the address if you're interested in that sort of stuff. Keep going and you get a nice taste-of-Maine kinda drive, and rt 1 leads right to Bangor (stephen kings house!), then Bar Harbor. or maybe the other way around. but Bar Harbor is really really really nice. Then about 10 hours of nothing at all, then Canada.
