Kingdom A&S
I have no complaints about the way the event was run
I had no crummy exchanges with painful people
Nobody snubbed me or was rude in any way
Everything was exactly as advertised, and yet I had a terrible time. I think that the average SCA event is simply no longer meeting my needs. I think I need to be honest with myself that the

This makes me very sad to read. I want to help... or make things better... or something. Is there anything I can do? Come visit? Wear Elizabethans with you and spit in all those Norse eyes?
Let me know if I can help, please.

My sad cannot be your chicken. As I told Aaron in our brief chat (he sought me out, sweet man) You guys have a whole flock of those these days.
We get to be focused on our grownup wants all summer long while Zach goes off to his other dad's house. Most parents don't have that much "time off", so really I'm just bein a whiner.
I can think of a zillion things I'd like to do to be more involved at events and get my spark back, but none of them are really feasible till Zach is the magical age of "older."
If any hobby is not fun for my kid, I just can't drag him there and have any fun myself.

I'm sorry you're feeling this way. How old is Zach now (I've lost track)? Maybe it's time to take a break and focus on hobbies for him. Is he in Scouts or anything?

Zach is ten now.
His disability makes it really hard for him to participate in many group activities.(most sports are right out; too much waiting)
The scouts in this area (at least our local chapter) seemed entirely military focused. Their activities as advertised at the first meeting were: shooting BB guns, touring a battleship, and getting to talk firsthand to a fighter pilot. Not the "how to make a fire" or weave a bracelet kindof club I was hoping for.
His therapy appointments are twice a month on Saturday mornings already, so it gets difficult there too.

I cant imagine trying to do that with a kidling in tow, not if you want to be a good parent and not just let them run wild...
to taht end, what kind of event would feed your sca soul? our camp at sept crown seemed to work well for that? it may be that some events work for you and Zach now, and some dont, and thats cool. and, as Zachs needs change, what events work for you might change as well :)
it was lovely to see you albeit briefly on Sat :), but again, didnt really get a chance for meaninful interaction, but I had kinda expected that since I rarely get those at that event (mores the pity, but it is what it is....I dont go to crown events expecting much in the way of real reenactment, either ;))

One magical momentous day I asked my son if he wanted to attend an ithra with me, and he said yes. !!! It was the start of several wonderful years, and then he decided he didn't want to go to ithras anymore. Fortunately he was old enough to leave home by himself. He doesn't really have a job in the SCA but he likes to go to events. If it's local he usually leaves early, and if it's farther away he will retreat to the camper and sleep and watch dvds. He likes to wear garb, hang out with Cedric, or maybe the games master or on the thrown weapons range. He isn't sociable enough to enjoy spending all day with people, especially people he doesn't know. I'm lucky that he likes the SCA.
I hope you find a happy solution, and Zach is getting older every day.

Being a grown-up is tough. Like the others said, if there is anything I can do to help let me know. I am much less busy at local events these days, so perhaps we could work on kids activities together or something. Your kid is pretty awesome so we could work something out without stepping on pied piper toes. This event was not so kid friendly, which is why most of my close friends weren't there, and those that were, sent the kids to Grandparents. So don't give up hope. I have lot's of kids stuff planned for June Faire. :)
