A hypothetical question

Do you think you'll watch (and like) a Horatio-less Hornblower movie? I know Hornblower is about Hornblower, but I want to know, what if Horatio is disposed of instead of Archie? Archieless HH3 traumatized many of us, but do you think you would find Archie as the hero of the movie so interesting that it's worth watching even without the H/A ( Read more... )

fandom thoughts, hornblower

Well, I like Archie better than I like Horatio, so I'd at least be more inclined to give it a chance.

Archie's definitely more interesting, as a character and as a man. Archie's adventures would be great fun, while Horatio as The Man Alone is miserably boring and irritating. Archie would probably make a better hero than Horatio - he's got that fighting spirit and, as you said, sense of adventure, in him - and I couldn't understand what it is that some people find so attractive about this male Mary Sue character. The presence of Archie does make Horatio A LOT more approachable (and sweet and adorable), when Archie's there, Horatio becomes much more human, but Archie is a wonderful human being through and through, with or without Horatio :)

I enjoy watching movies about relationship between people more than those about a hero, but if Archie is the hero, then I'd watch it because I know Archie would never disappoint me :)

Love these two posts. I totally agree. I don't get what's so great about Horatio by himself. He's a Mary Sue! Who wants to watch that? Not me. I don't like Bush at all either, so . . .

But Archie is fabulous and MUCH more interesting. So I'd at least give him a whirl. He'd make a much better show than Horatio would.

I wouldn't be interested. I would probably watch one or two of them just out of curiosity (same as I did HH3), but I was watching for the relationship and once that's gone, so am I. ;)

I totally understand that :) the truth is I'm not sure how I would respond to an Archie-centric, Horatio-less movie. (I must say I'd like it more than HH3, though ;) ) What I love most is the relationship, and though I usually have a favourite character in a favourite movie, the real reason I love that movie is usually because I enjoy the relationship ;)

*giggle* I don't think there's much we *wouldn't* like more than HH3 ;)

See, the problem is, I'm a *huge* fan of the books, and thus a *huge* fan of Mr. Bush ( ... )

Mr. Bush *is* Archie, in the books, to an extent.

Wow. I don't think anything could be further from the truth. Archie's a complex character with unique issues for a male in an action movie. He's more dimensional than Horatio by far. I don't see Bush having any of that. They just seem so very much like opposites and completely different personalities.

Personality wise, yes. This is very true.

I kind of mean in the role they play. Archie is a lot more cheerful, a lot more opptimistic than Bush *ever* is, (and a little bit more emo, too, bless him :P ) but they still serve the same sort of purpose when put against hornblower. I don't think either of them could hold their own series, simply because they really are meant as character foils to hornblower.

The movie archie kind of ran away with the whole idea, which is why they had to kill him off. ;;

But, yes. I will concede your point.

I would give it a try, but I understand that Archie is no "hero" like Horatio. Archie is a hero, of course, but he doesn't crave attention. He doesn't want to be perfect. He lacks ambition and he's probably not as daring and calculating as Horatio is (and therefore wouldn't provide with enough tension to make a movie worth the watch). I love Archie, don't get me wrong, but I think a series like that needs a leader like Horatio to work.

And that's why I also love HH3, not only because of the blatant Horatio/Bush and Côtard/everyone. :) Erm - maybe I'm not the right person to answer your question since I like HH3... *shuts up*

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate people who like HH3, and everyone is entitled to have their opinion anyway. It's just that Mr Bush is not to my taste, that's all :)

A series with Archie as the hero would be very different from the Hornblower series we now have, no doubt about that. I think this idea would *work* though, in a different way.But as to whether I would like it or not, I couldn't answer for sure until we have an Archie series ;) Because I lurve teh Crumpet, I'd definitely watch any Crumpet movie, yeah.

Oh, well, I love Bush. ;) But I won't argue about that, everyone has his unique taste and it's good that way!

I agree that a series or movie based on Archie would have a completely different plot. I think the suspense would come because of emotional action, not real action. I can see that work, of course! I just understood your main question like HH without Horatio but with Archie. That wouldn't work. But I'd certainly watch a movie about Archie!
