Kevin Smith, amazing director and writer (of such films as Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and the now-playing Clerks II), also plays Silent Bob, hetero life-mate to Jay. Jay is Jason Mewes, who battled drug addiction for years and is now clean and sober for three years and playing Jay again in Clerks II

I read the whole saga a while ago, it's really amazing. I have so much more respect and admiration now for Kevin Smith.

*nod* It's - I mean, it feels sort of invasive to read, but also I'm very grateful that he wrote all of that up and shared it with us. I mean, wow. As a person and as a writer Kevin Smith seems just incredibly cool.
