haha I loved the movie, and HATED the book. The authors style of writing bugged the hell out of me. Far too descriptive. I got half way through reading it and had to stop to save my sanity. (I also had to read coles notes for the half I missed as it was for school >_>) Really, I love reading...but I hated that book. ^^;
I had to read it twice for school, lol. That really made it stick in my brain. I sometimes hate it when writers get too descriptive with things. It's like, "Just say that you sat down in the chair already!" I don't remember being bothered that way in this particular book though. Haven't read it in long time.
I have to chime in and say that the Lord of the Rings movies are worthy of the books. (Love both) Also the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is my big guilty pleasure. Of course it's not as complex and multilayered as the book, but then I am in love with Colin Firth. :) (The Keira Kneightly movie is rubbish IMO). And I heard, that the TV series Dexter should be way better than the books. Don't know, if that's true, as I haven't read them yet.
ETA: The TV adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South is equally good, if not better than the book, though the series is quite different at times, they managed to get the tone just right.
I have to agree with Pride and Prejudice and North and South. I wouldn't say they were better then the book, but they are on par. If you are the kind of person that can't read older English novels, these TV adaptions really do the books justice. I would highly recommend them :)
North and South! Have to agree! For me it was just as good. The thing with that book for me is that I couldn't slog through all the union and political talk without having to take a breather, so the series was a refreshing change.
I agree with Pride & Prejudice! I've to read the book for school ( .. ew) so they showed us the 1995 BBC version, which is really true to the book :-) I've watched the Kiera Knightley version before (can't remember why), but after watching the 1995 BBC version I do agree that the Kiera Knightley version is rubbish !!
So far, the only book I've read that was worse than it's film counterpart was Forrest Gump. I will never get those hours back. The whole book was just a waste of time, I hated it.
Gaston Leroux's 'The Phantom of the Opera' is one of my favourite books, and I prefer it to the musical and the movie, despite the singing, dancing, etc. And slightly OT, but 'translations' are always interesting too, like Romeo and Juliet to West Side Story (and whatever else there is), and La Dame Aux Camellias to Moulin Rouge. :)
I really dislike the Harry Potter movies. The first one was fine, the second one was too, but third was okay, but the fourth movie relied too much on the fact the audience had seen the book. The continuity was awful. I know, everyone has read Harry Potter, but the fact peeved me to no end.

Horton Foote, the screenwriter, passed away recently. It's sad to see such a talented writer go.
