I usually like the book more than the movie - especially because I'm a pretty visual person and always try to imagine what I read and the movie comes up short all the time. Or almost all the time. Because the very first title that came into my mind was Lord of the Rings, that exceeded all expectations for me. Love the book, too, and the movie is a spellbound. (All the three of them - the story simply leaps out of the screen.) What I really would like to see on the screen and has never been made into film was The Secret History by Donna Tartt. How the hell could it avoid being made into film...? And the adaptations that I'm waiting for the most are Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane (coming out this year) and The Front Runner by Patricia Nell Warren (that most likely will remain just a promise). But I digress. ;-)
Chiming back in. I just recalled the recent BBC adaptation (2006, I think) of Jane Eyre and I have to say it was awesome. I love the book as well, massively, but I'd seen a different adaptation of Jane Eyre before which left me thoroughly disappointed at how much was left out, and this one... just did everything right.
One of my favorite book-to-movie adaptations was The Green Mile, by Stephen King. I just felt that it really capture the spirit of the books and the actors did a phenomenal job. Also, as much as I love Stephen King sometimes he writes a bit disjointedly, and can lose my interest. The movie didn't have that problem. (Don't get me started on Carrie, I could barely get through that particular book, so I thought the movie was tons better.)
