It wasn’t the wordy apology that had convinced him, it was the soft way Mark said the last word. Like he had never even considered that Eduardo might take it that way, like he was seeing everything in an even less favorable light and hurting for it. Eduardo had opened his mouth to accept his apology before he had caught Mark slipping his nickname in there, and it had just gotten to him how familiar Mark still thought they could be.
“Mark, you don’t get to do this, okay? You don’t get to call me Wardo and you don’t get to say this now and expect anything from me for it. People aren’t code, and you can’t just say what I want to hear to undo all your errors. This is, it’s unexpected ( ... )

And Eduardo must have said it too quietly, without enough of his tone, because Mark’s face hadn’t been the dry amusement like he had aimed for, even at the expense of the anger he had held onto with good reason. He had just nodded, blinking, and walked away, throwing something over his shoulder like an apology for bothering him. That had made his decision more than anything else - that Mark had finally reached a place where he realized sometimes his presence wasn’t a gift. That he realized you had to do more to keep a relationship functioning.
“Mark,” he had called, almost half expecting Mark to ignore him, to escape the uncomfortable situation as quickly as possible as he had tended to do when they were friends. But Mark had stopped, if not turned, waiting for him to say his piece. Waiting for him ( ... )

Thank you! I really tried to work so that Mark could be Mark and still apologetic. While being logical, stil express that he adores and misses Eduardo in a way that Eduardo could understand.
Eduardo is so awkward, yes! 'Cause he's still so confused and stunned by Mark's new, mature act of prostrating himself to get forgiveness. He'll get there, like the last part says! ^^
