I think Screwtape, as in so many cases, is absolutely right. The moment we stop thinking about education as a place to nuture excellence is the moment that our way of life (both natural and eternal) is put in jeopardy.
But at the same time it my firm belief that Screwtape pissed himself with joy at the theology which states that man can be assured of his own salvation. "I'm better than you," which disguises itself as "I'm saved" is just as dangerous a social doctrine.
Clearly the answer is to celebrate excellence while instilling the virtue of humility in the excellent. Not that I think that doesn't present its own problems, but I think its the most likely to be eventually effective.
