well the only references are to MUDs / Text Games in general, and then the whole 'power up' thing is just a DBZ in-joke aaron and i have about people powering up for 5 episodes at a time just to fight one bad guy. so you're not missing too much with the last part.

I got how they were references to Text Games. I also get part of the DBZ thing because there's some kid in my hallway that watches it. At least I think so. I always here like, "HIIYYAAAA KKIIIII OOOHHHH" shit coming from his room. Maybe he's masturbating, I have no idea.
