My thoughts on the VMAs

This is in no way a post condoning the actions of Kanye West at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. While I, myself, am not a fan of Taylor Swift she was clearly seen as deserving of the award, and I’m at least glad it was for this song promoting pretty stupid girls vs. smart plain girls, rather than “Love Story.” What West did was completely ( Read more... )

I still think "You belong With Me" sets up a dichotomy that we can both be angry at, considering we wear short skirts, Tshirts and we're far from being dumb. This for some reason bugs me more than love story. But then again, because she needs to reread Romeo and Juliet before picking the songs other people wrote for her, she probably doesn't get my qualm either.

I never watch the VMAs anymore. I forget they're on and instead watch funny independent British films. Look at me, all hipster and shit.

Finally, I will be late for Quizo on Wednesday

I would hope this is an attempt at humor, 'cause I mean damn, you are reading too much into it and taking it a little too personally.

nope. i'm serious. young women all over the country are hearing this song and assuming they're either smart or pretty. it's all over the media, really, and i can't stop it...but i can still hate it.

also, i'm not going to quizo. my car broke down again.

With some time to think about it, I've got to agree that this was all a big PR move on West's part. Showing up swigging a bottle of Hennessy, somehow evading security around the stage...stuff like that makes me think "staged".

IMO Love Story, at the most, uses the most barebones elements (ie names and general nature of the relationship) of the play it references. If anything I'm more confused by the Scarlett Letter reference.

You know that part always confused me too, but the Romeo and Juliet thing just frustrates me! And I agree with what amanda said. When she brought it up I was all yeah that's totally true.

Also, people at the VMA's say it wasn't staged, but again i have a hard time to believe it with West sometimes.
