Progress: 7/50 patches completed. I'm still on schedule, though it was difficult to find time to finish the planned three patches. Some unexpectedly long train travel on Friday allowed me the last bit of time I needed though.

I must say I kind of like the copper plating after all, but then I've been known to have a strange taste in rings.

I don't mind the colour as such, but I really dislike the smell.

It's gonna sound totally weird, but I have the same with certain knitting needles (they are good to knit with, but the smell!).

Nah, that's not weird. Our skin reacts with metal, and different metals and different skin chemistry can make a whole range of smells. Aluminium knitting needles would probably not smell at all (since for knitting needles it would be etched, which forms an inert oxide layer).
