True to her word, Tara’s got the coffee brewing by the time that I manage to escape the powerful lure of the snooze button and stagger out of bed to join her in the kitchen. Early mornings haven’t been my style for a good couple of years now, and the only thing that keeps me from being a downright grouch is the lingering thrill of her unexpected news… not to mention her ‘distractions’ yesterday evening… and straight-up curiosity about where we could be going. Any vacation with Tara is bound to be a good one, but damn, this not-knowing is going to kill me before we’re halfway to the airport.
Our bags are already waiting by the door, long since ready to go, but I insist on doing one last sweep of the house before the shuttle arrives, locking things up and making sure the place is secure. It’s not like I’ve got much to hide anymore or that our neighbors are particularly suspicious, but that sort of ingrained paranoia is awful hard to shake. And I’m… I’m a family man now. I can afford to go a little crazy with the security. (Until Tara tells me to stop stomping around and sit, anyway.)
The shuttle arrives with the sunrise at five minutes to six and I haul our suitcases down the front steps to throw them into the trunk, seriously considering the possibility of bribing our driver to tell me which terminal we’re going to. But Tara keeps shooting me that wicked little half-smile that lets me know she’s just loving this chance to make me squirm, so I behave and let her have her fun. For now.
In the backseat, I lace my fingers through hers, giving her hand a squeeze and tugging her over to me, as close as the seatbelts will allow. “Hints?” I plead, fixing her with my very best puppydog eyes. “One little hint? First letter? General direction?” I’d keep up the begging, but the sunrise tangles in her hair as we start down the road away from our home, weaving her a fiery halo, and all I can do is grin like the love-struck fool that I am. In a not unprecedented turn of events, I’m completely at her mercy and don’t mind it in the least.
