Summary: High School senior Jared Padalecki is public enemy number one in his school for one reason: he's gay. The only person he can trust is his little sister. But when the new kid, Jensen Ackles, wants to be his friend, Jared may finally find what he's been missing in his life.
Chapter One The entire car ride to Jensen’s house went by in a blur, and before he knew it, they were turning into a driveway of a house not too far from where Jared lived. Jensen grabbed both of their book bags from the backseat and waited as Jared got out of the car slowly, carefully, so he wouldn’t put even more strain on his already hurt body.
“Nobody’s home, so you don’t have to worry about anything, K?” Jensen called over his shoulder as he led the way to the front door and unlocked it, dropping both bags on the ground as they entered.
As Jensen led him through the house, pointing out which door led to where, Jared was silently wondering why he wasn’t scared. He was home alone with a boy he’d only known for an hour, and nobody in this town ever really gave a crap about him.
So why did Jensen? What made him so different from everyone else?
He had to stop his internal debate when Jensen led him into the room farthest down the hall. Jensen flicked on the light and Jared stood in the doorway, staring. He didn’t really know what it was he was expecting to find when he saw Jensen’s room; but this seriously wasn’t it.
All four walls were painted a dark blue color and the flooring was a soft-looking tan carpet, both obviously new. An empty bookshelf stood against the left wall, and next to it was a decently sized, yet also empty, desk. The right wall had a dresser and a sliding door, which Jared guessed led to the closet. Different sized boxes littered the room, with labels such as clothes and books and music, and then Jared stupidly remembered that Jensen was the new kid, which meant that he just moved here and his entire world was still packed away in boxes.
Jared’s eyes finally landed on the bed in the middle of the room and had to force his mind and his body to relax and behave.
Jensen’s bed was huge. It had a wooden headboard and a matching night table. The bedspread was a dark, almost black, midnight blue that Jared ridiculously thought would probably bring out the green of Jensen’s eyes.
He hadn’t realized he was staring until Jensen awkwardly cleared his throat and scratched the back of his neck, a faint blush appearing on his face.
“Um...just stay here a sec, be right back.” And with that, Jensen left Jared alone in his bedroom to wander into the house.
Once he was alone, Jared took a moment to breathe. His body still hurt; his head was throbbing in time with his heart and it ached to breathe in too quickly or too deep. He winced when he chanced running a hand over his stomach, knowing that the bruising was going to be a spectacular shade of angry purples and reds by nightfall.
He continued to mentally catalogue all of his injuries when Jensen walked back into the room, his hands full.
“I got you some aspirin and water because you must have a killer headache,” He said as he handed Jared the pills and water bottle, which he gratefully took and swallowed down.
Jensen then sat on the bed and motioned for Jared to sit with him. Jared hesitated, but then moved forward and sat down, eyes staring straight ahead.
He didn’t notice Jensen moving towards him until he caught sight of Jensen’s hand moving in his periphery towards his face, causing him to flinch away violently, waiting for the hit.
“Whoa, Jared, calm down, it’s okay. I’m not gunna hurt you.” Jensen said to him, but Jared’s heart was still pounding and fear-filled adrenaline was still pumping through his veins.
“I swear I won’t hurt you, Jare, I just want to help,” he said quietly. Jared glanced over to see that Jensen had a small wet towel in his hand and was looking at him with concern clear in his eyes.
It was then that Jared realized that he had dried blood on his split lip and chin, and that Jensen just wanted to stay true to his word of helping Jared clean himself up.
“S-sorry,” Jared mumbled, letting his hair fall into his eyes, creating a shield between him and the other boy.
“S’fine...just, let me help you, please? I’ll be careful...I won’t hurt you.” Jensen answered, putting emphasis on the last words.
Jared took a deep breath and nodded slowly, turning so his body was facing Jensen’s on the bed. This time, Jensen raised his arm slowly and in clear view for Jared to see, determined to not scare him again.
Jared’s heart began beating wildly again when he felt the wet cloth gently dabbing at his mouth, lips parting automatically as Jensen carefully cleaned away the caked on blood.
Jared was in disbelief at just how gentle Jensen was being with him. His eyes traveled up to Jensen’s face to see the look of total concentration he had as he started cleaning away the blood from Jared’s chin and neck, being as careful as he could.
That’s when Jared’s heart decided to beat crazily for other reasons.
Jensen was the physical embodiment of the word beautiful. And sure, normally the word ‘beautiful’ wasn’t associated with guys, but Jared couldn’t think of any other word that fit; gorgeous, maybe, or hotter than the sun...but nothing else seemed as perfect, as right, as calling him beautiful.
And it wasn’t only his physical appearance that made Jared think that.
It was who Jensen was that truly made him beautiful. They’d only known each other for a few hours, but Jared could already tell Jensen was kind to a fault; the kind of guy that would say he’d take a bullet for a friend and mean it. The kind of guy that wouldn’t stand someone up or be rude; the kind of guy that anyone would want to bring home to meet the family.
The kind of guy Jared could allow himself to open up to and risk being hurt by.
The kind of guy that Jared could see himself easily falling in love with.
He was pulled out of his thoughts by the front door slamming shut, making them both flinch.
”Jenny, I’m home!” came a yell from the front of the house.
Jensen sighed, blushing a bit at the nickname as he let his hand drop and slowly stood up, offering his hand to Jared so he could stand as well.
“Who’s--?”
“That? Would be my sister Mac, home from school; the middle school here gets out a half hour after our school.”
That’s when Jared’s heart dropped.
Little sister. Middle school. Megan.
“Shit...” Jared whispered to himself, looking around the room trying to remember where he put his bag.
Jensen noticed how freaked out Jared became and began to worry.
“Jare, what’s wrong? If you’re worried about my sister...she’ll be cool about it, I promise, it’ll be okay-”
Jared just shook his head and made his way for the door when he remembered where Jensen left his backpack, all but running to get out of the house and to his sister.
“Whoa, Jared, wait up! What’s wrong?!” Jensen called as he chased after him, blowing by his shocked sister in the hallway and catching up to Jared just as he pulled open the front door to leave.
Jensen grabbed Jared’s arm, forcing him to turn around. “Jared, what the hell is going on? Where are you going?” Jensen asked as he took in Jared’s frazzled appearance, not paying attention to his little sister who was staring at the both of them with confusion clear on her face.
“My...my sister, Megan, I meet up with her after school every day. No matter what, I’m there.” Jared explained.
“Okay, well...I’m sure she’ll forgive you when you get home; just tell her you were at a friend’s house, I’m sure-”
“No, you don’t understand. Meg is the only one who knows just how bad shit gets at school; she...she takes care of me, and she worries. If I’m not there when she gets out, she jumps to conclusions and freaks. She probably thinks I’m in the hospital, or I was so beat up I’m currently unconscious, locked away in the janitor’s closet or an empty classroom or...”
Now that Jensen understood why Jared was acting the way he was, he felt guilty for making Jared go to his house, but he knew a way to help.
“Let me drive you, it’ll be quicker than running...especially since you’ll just end up hurting yourself even more.” Jensen offered, realizing he was still gripping the sleeve of Jared’s shirt and quickly let go.
Jared stayed silent, debating his options.
“Jared...please?”
Jared looked up to see Jensen’s pleading expression and caved, nodding and heading over to Jensen’s car, silently praying that his little sister wasn’t already calling the cops.
**
Jensen thought they should check at the middle school first, but Jared knew she’d be home so he gave Jensen the directions to his house, willing his heart to just calm the fuck down.
As they turned down his street, he saw a figure sitting on his porch and breathed a sigh of relief as Jensen stopped the car and he shot out.
“Meg!” He yelled, making her raise her head off her knees and gasp.
“Jay! Oh thank god!” she called as jumped off the steps and ran, flinging herself into him.
He sucked in a breath as she collided with him and his bruises, but he hugged her back, knowing she needed the comfort.
“What the hell, Jay, where were you!?” She screamed at him, eyes filled with tears.
“Um...that would be my fault,” Jensen said quietly as he walked over to them, carrying Jared’s backpack and smiling slightly.
Megan looked at him wearily, keeping a tight grip on Jared’s arm as Jensen stood closer to them.
“Meg, this is Jensen. Jensen, this is my little sister Megan.”
Megan continued to stare him down and Jared could tell that Jensen was beginning to feel uneasy about it. “Ackles, right? You’re Mackenzie’s older brother?”
Jensen nodded and Jared realized that that was the first time he heard Jensen’s last name. Why he never bothered asking for it before, he had no idea, but some part of him felt content, happy that he got to find out something else about Jensen, even something as trivial as a last name.
“I took Jared to my place to help clean up his busted lip and we lost track of time, I’m sorry.”
Megan nodded, visibly relaxing once she realized that Jensen wasn’t a threat, that he was one of the good guys.
“Thanks again, Jensen.” Jared said quietly as he grabbed his bag from Jensen’s hand and smiled slightly.
Jensen just grinned and nodded at him, “S’no problem...I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Yeah...see you then.” Jared turned to go in the house but noticed that his sister still hadn’t moved, “Meg, c’mon, let’s go.”
“I’ll be in in a sec, Jay.” She replied. Jared sighed but kept walking, exhaustion attacking his body as the day’s events finally caught up with him, making his movements sluggish.
“Fine...play nice.” He called out wearily as he opened the door and disappeared into the house, unaware of Jensen’s eyes following his every move.
“So...”
“So...” Jensen repeated, suddenly wishing Jared was back with them. He wouldn’t admit it out loud, but Megan was pretty intimidating for a 14 year old girl.
“What happened in school? And don’t try and sugar coat the truth; I get enough of that from him.”
Jensen sighed but decided to go for the truth. He wanted to be friends with Jared, and it was obvious how close he and his sister were, so it wouldn’t be the smartest idea to lie to her right off the bat.
“I went today to sign up and to get my books and schedule. I was leaving the campus when I saw a group of jocks beating on your brother. I told them to get lost or I’d tell the principal and get them all expelled. The threat of expulsion seemed to do the trick and they ran. Then I took him home to clean him up, and when Mac came home, he freaked out about forgetting to pick you up. Then we came here...and, well, you know the rest.”
Megan stayed silent as she stared at him, mentally cataloguing everything about him that she could in that moment.
Finally, she spoke again, “Don’t hurt him.”
“What?”
“Jay needs a friend, someone other than me to talk to and be with.
“You could be good for him...you could give me back my brother, the one he was before all this crap started happening to him.” She told him as she looked away from him and down the road, staring at nothing, suddenly lost in thought.
Jensen thought about that for a moment. you could be good for him. And he really wanted to be. He wanted to be whatever it was Jared needed. He wanted to be there for Jared and to help him realize he wasn’t alone, that he was wanted.
“Promise me you won’t hurt him.” She asked quietly, looking back at him, eyes filling with unshed tears.
“I promise.” He told her, knowing in that moment that he would do absolutely everything he possibly could to fix Jared.
