His first job of the year was Arashi's concert at Nagoya. When asked for an anecdote of that day, he tells of how the Johnnys Juniors went and hung out at Nino's place.
“That night, the Juniors had been at Aiba's place and then they came over to hang out at mine. But I didn't join in the conversations or anything and just gamed. We've been together on this journey for the whole tour, so there's nothing left to talk about, right? (laughs)”
In saying that, isn't that also proof that you're close to your juniors?
“That too, though I don't think I'm very senior-like in the first place. Like Aiba, regardless of how exhausted he is after coming from his drama filming, he'd still cater to them. I'm not all big-brotherly the way Jun-kun or Sho-chan are. Even if for some reason someone said to me, 'Teach me, please!', I'd immediately say, 'No way!' (laughs)”
There's a reason for not teaching them.
“There are no right answers in this line of work, so it's not something you can master and teach someone. For me, at least, I never asked my seniors to teach me anything and I've never gone to the set with the intention of specifically learning something. After all, if you were to ask a fellow football player just before a match, 'So how should I kick the ball?' they'd be pretty darn worried, wouldn't they?”
So you became accustomed to thinking like this because Nino has always been 'alone' on set ever since you were a child.
“I never really appeared in high school dramas with lots of actors my age. It may be because I've always been working with people older than me ever since I started out. For my first drama, 'Amagi Goe', I entered a set where nobody taught me anything and I was just yelled at everyday. I'd never really watched any dramas at that time either. I didn't have a clue how things worked on set. I had no idea why I was being scolded, so it was terrifying. So I had no choice but to go by trial and error. When I watched the completed drama air, for the first time I was like, 'Ah, so this is how it was!' I didn't know what I should have been looking for or how it would be edited. Even for the movie 'Letters from Iwo Jima', it was tough because the exchanges were all in English which was alien to me. But through experience, I gradually got used to how the set was like and what the director wanted, so I finally began to understand the nuances. It got a lot better than it had been at the start (laughs).”
So in doing that, you began to understand and develop through your own experiences of each set.
I can watch these shows objectively because they're made by my favourite craftsman.
“With regards to variety shows, I think it was only fairly recently that I came to understand them. Given a show's timeslot and concept, the sort of atmosphere the viewers want and what we seek to do, I've become able to react to that. Even if that sort of information is given to you, it's not something you can act on immediately. Of course, that's what Arashi are trying to do with all our might. Although it might be because we don't really understand it that we have to try so hard.”
Do you watch the dramas and variety shows that you appear in when they air?
“I'll check them out every now and then. If it's a variety show, it's because I want to know which parts of my talk were used (laughs). Sometimes I watch it with the staff of the show too. Definitely for regular shows. Speaking of which, some years ago when I was given the chance to make a documentary, I watched it airing together with the staff. Not only that, we were all eating together at the time. So nobody spoke a word while it was airing, and at the end when the staff asked me, 'So how was it?', I just replied with one sentence: 'I think it was great' (laughs)”
Even for your own shows, you can watch objectively and laugh.
“For me, participating in the creation of something is what interests me, so I don't really pay much attention to the result. At first, when asked about that show, I went to the extent of checking with them first, saying, 'In my documentary, nothing flashy happens so it's pretty boring. It's not like a draft for the top star players. If I had to say, it's more like the 2nd draft [1]. Are you okay with that?' (laughs). It's like having a craftsman's disposition.”
Your own nature and merit is something measured by yourself; it's something you've grown and developed yourself. The most important thing is that it's not something that someone can teach you; there's no point if you don't think about it yourself.
“There are plenty of people I admire, but there's no point in becoming a copy of someone. You can't be anyone but yourself. Don't imitate anyone, just believe in what you want to do and continue doing it. Keep going in the direction you're pursuing and the result will be everything. That's what makes someone original, right?”

Kazunari Ninomiya
Born 17th June 1983 in Tokyo. Arashi's new single, 'Calling/Breathless' was released on 6th March. For New Year's Day this year, Nino was, “in the end, just bumming around at home. My friends had invited me to go to Hawaii with them and I'd planned to go, but... That was the time when we'd been given the chance to host Kouhaku, so I ended up turning them down. After all, after a huge job like that I just want about 2 days to sleep in. Anyway, my friends pretty much understand that lazy personality of mine... or they should! (laughs)”
