Pretty bananas, right?!
Everyone in NYC was super happy about the news... until the *exact* moment they figure out that Shappy is coming with me.
The team actually reverse-clapped me when they figured it out. They took BACK their applause!

Thanks, Matthew! I'm still pretty floored by it myself -- so WOW indeed!
But hey -- I have a question you might be able to answer, considering you are academia-savvy these days. Do you know if UPenn's writing department has a reputation for being one way or another? Jeff McDaniel told me that he always thought of them as being very language poet focused, but I hadn't heard that before. Do you have any opinion on that, or have heard anything? I would love your thoughts!

Thanks for the feedback! The course they want me to teach in the Spring is intro course combining non-fiction and poetry. Hopefully that hybrid vision will make them more open to teaching non-tradition (to them) poetry.
But on the other side of the situation, I'm excited about being exposed to new poets & new types of poetry. I've been truly spoiled by NYC and the types of poets I've been exposed to at the BPC, Poets House, St. Marks, etc... But still, I'm sure there is a whole strata of poets whose work I'd never see in those environments, and to which I'll now be exposed! Can't wait!

Thanks! I'm really excited about it!
And I really hope that people in the slam community take note of the closing statement given by Jessica Lowenthal where she wrote, "Her involvement with the NYC-Urbana Poetry series first drew the committee to her application..."
To anyone who has been afraid to apply for something (a grant? lit journal? residency? etc...) because they felt their background in slam was a detriment, I hope we can stick a fork in the misconception once and for all! ;)

The Mutter Museum is pretty much the coolest place ever!
Have you seen their new YouTube channel, where the new director of the museum, Robert Hicks, feeds their medical leeches with his own blood:
I don't have a thing about blood, but even I was creeped out by it! So awesome!
Also, the press release was accompanied by two images: a headshot of me and the following image provided by the Mutter Museum

To this day, the one thing I cannot handle in that museum is the wall of eye trauma. The moment I come into view, I immediately cover my eyes -- as if see an eyeball speared with a splinter will mean my eyeball will be skewered momentarily soon too! Ugh -- that wall!!

Thanks! I've been applying for residencies & fellowships for some time now -- I applied for some to write "Words In Your Face," so it's been that long! -- so to finally be awarded one feels humbling & amazing.
I hope it encourages other poets to think outside of the box. Taking time off to work on your art doesn't have to mean just touring -- there are other opportunities out there too to consider! ;)
