I have decided to cut a bunch of people off my friends list. If you never comment on my posts or otherwise interact directly with me, I have removed you or will probably do so soon

Yeah, I just don't have the time for all that filter stuff. I've tried - I do put some of my religious stuff behind a "no atheists" filter (no really, that's what it's called - LOL). And I have a "no [insert partner's name here]" filter. But that's about it.
filters are one of the reasons why I'm back at lj and letting my fb page gather dust -- i find lj's filters to be better and more trusty worthy. That said, i loled at your "no atheists" filter. I only use about 3 right now: a gq filter, a "no one who lives with me" filter, and then the regular friends. More than that, you're right, it does get a little complicated.
I do this semi-regularly with people who don't comment. Moreso if they update a lot (meaning they are on LJ frequently) but still don't comment. I am...not really okay with people reading my stuff who won't also comment so I can get to know them better. Reciprocity, I guess. Also, I comment A LOT, and thus the reverse applies and I like to get lots too. :P
By nature I'm kind of a lurker. I like to lurk, even if it is kind of creepy. I guess I'm just kind of a shy person, much less so online, but I really wouldn't know what to say most of the time replying to posts. I am very good about reading though, but I'm just not one to respond usually if its a one word answer.
