"Rigsby's an excellent lover I'm sure. Tough, but fair. Right? Right? Right."

Just saw the pre-aired pilot for The Mentalist and duuude. I'm going to love this show. And so are you!

The Mentalist centers around a mentalist (what's mentalism?) who uses his talents as he works as a private investigator to solve crimes alongside the police department.

As it is, Patrick Jane is just as tormented, childish and clever as one of my ( Read more... )

I am sure it may be good but it reminds me of the USA network show called Psych which is really good and very funny.

Have you heard of Psych in France?

I actually downloaded the first series of Psych, but never finished it. I don't really know why, I think it's definitely too comical for me and, to be honest, I thought the two characters had a brilliant chemistry but were rather boring on their own. Maybe I should give it another try, tho!

But, yes, I can see how the shows would sound alike, but they are actually very different. The Mentalist is a procedural, and way darker than you'd first think. It's a bit like House MD, really : House spends his time goofing around and the show's objectively funny, but without being a comedy. It's the same here - Patrick Jane has a childish, curious mind, but he's overcame by his personal tragedy when there's no one around to show off to.

Thanks for your thoughts, and I think it sounds inte5resting being that it is darker than Psych.

Pysch is playful and just suppose to be spoofy.

I've seen the pilot and I liked it and like elysium1996 it made me thought of Psych. Psych without the funny. It's the same kind of plot without the angsty past. Fake psychic, real detective, etc.

I didn't think it was funny but it was pleasant and it will be a nice cop show for the fall.

Ah, well, maybe it's been too long since I watched Psych, because I really didn't think of it while I was watching this one. I think their approach is very different on many levels : Jane is fully integrated into a police unit (although they are pretty useless ATM), he doesn't try to play the mystic card, and he's more into psychology than mere tricks. If anything, his capacity of observation and deduction made me think of Criminal Minds.

I must have a weird sense of humor then, because the opening scene (with his "It's not as bad as it looks"), the restaurant scene, his falling in the stairs, and his attitude of repentant child at the end all had me rewatching the scenes a few times just to appreciate the comic timing. Granted it's not laughing-out-loud humor, but I find it cleverly silly!
