Soooo I'm looking for 2 bedroom apartments in/around the Albany area for when I go back this year. I know this topic has been addressed once or twice, but I've been out of the country for a year (study abroad wooooo) and I was wondering if any of you nice people could tell me where the non-horrifying places to live are? I know sort of western ( Read more... )

hmmmm...
i lived on benson st at the quail end and it was kind of a crappy ghetto. definitely don't live on or around quail, it is a sketchy place esp. at night.

but now i live in a nicer part (south allen) but people stole my and my roommates bikes off our porch twice, when they were locked with u-locks....
so idk what place around albany really is safe...

pretty much anywhere in albany, take your bike inside if you can. people from one neighborhood seem to go cruising in another neighborhood for stuff to steal.

For general listings, check Craigslist
http://albany.craigslist.org/apa/

I'd definitely recommend the New Elouise Apartments, if you're a quiet person (paper thin walls). It's a bit pricey, and 2brs can be hard to get, but it's in a great area (corner of South Lake and Western) and it seems safe.

Oh, and Googlemaps street view is great for getting a general feeling about a place, though it seems that a chunk of Western Ave is missing.

Craigslist is really good. I recommend calling any place that you're remotely interested in. The more choices, the better.

I live on Lark Street and I would recommend the Lark area and the Washington Park state area. Some of it might seem pricey, but not if you know where to look! Again I'd recommend Craig's List. I tried to get into New Eloise for month but they never had space, so Craigslist is more reliable for finding actual listings.

I second this. This neighborhood truly rocks. If you walk up and down the streets in the Lark/Washington Park area, there are loads of "For Rent" signs. Also, the Madison side of the park is often less expensive than the State/Willett/S Lake sides (busy road, parking is not quite as efficient as in the other locales).

Thirded. I live on Willett, and while it's a bit more expensive, I feel that I'm living in a safe area. Which also happens to be incredibly convenient.

I will mention that trying to find a parking spot in this area is absolutely maddening; I've driven around for an hour and a half with no luck, so just keep that in mind.

Do you have a car? That makes all the difference in the world.

I should have a car, a big mutha-truck, but since I figure gas prices will be going nowhere but upwards (and how), while I don't mind finding a place that would be accessible only by car I'm looking first at places that are nearish to bus routes.

Thanks to everyone who's commented so far, it's been very helpful :)

It does, however, mean that you have some more options. There are some neighborhoods in Albany that, while super convenient if you have a car, are difficult if you don't. Often, too, the rents are cheaper as a result.

I'm guessing you mean apartments more on the north side, Rensselaer, Guilderland etc...?
