I've signed a lease and have the key to a new apartment. It's located in Campbell, Ca, which is a southern suburb of San Jose. It's about 16 miles from work (12 miles of it are on Hwy 85). It's a 1 story duplex, and I have a 2 bedroom apartment

Yeah. I was just thinking that for 3 months' rent here, I could pay for a full year at my last Pittsburgh apartment.
I can't double check right now, but I think I've paid more in rent than in federal taxes.

The sad thing (for me) is that you're paying less than we are. New Jersey housing sucks ass.

Landlords have been raising rents like crazy here in Chicago as well.. it makes me really mad because they try to say that their costs have been rising, when they are already making a killing. Then people can't afford to keep their own homes and they have to leave. I think it's partly an effect of the subprime lending catastrophe, since so many people got pushed back to renting.
